Florida Keys plan would buy raises homes for $5.5B protection effort
The Army Corps of Engineers proposes a $5.5 billion hurricane protection plan for the Florida Keys including elevating 7,300 homes, flood proofing 3,800 buildings, strengthening U S 1 in six places, and buying and demolishing about 300 homes. Voluntary buyouts are sought but eminent domain could be used if needed, drawing pushback from Monroe County which seeks a waiver to keep buys voluntary. The plan targets Key West Marathon and other Monroe locations with demolished lots in about 95 Key West homes, 84 Marathon, 48 in unincorporated Monroe, and 56 in Key Colony Beach.
