Oxford Orphanage license move stalls in NC Senate

Legislators backed away from forcing the Oxford Orphanage to obtain a state license, allowing the 161 year old Masonic Home for Children at Oxford to continue operating without supervision. The facility refuses black admission, and licensing for all homes stalled in Senate action as lawmakers delay until session end. Separately a highway crash over the holiday weekend killed 13 year old Angel Baker and injured eight others, raising state road fatalities to 630 for the year.

Judge baffled as teen released from jail by mistake

Durham district judge Carolyn Johnson says she lacked authority to modify Holloway’s probation and release him after a first appearance. The 17 year old later faced charges in three murders including the slayings of Peters in Granville County and a double Durham home killing. Superior Court later ordered Holloway rearrested.

Redistricting ruling fuels NC case optimism

In Durham, both sides see hope from the Supreme Court’s decision on Florida voting rights. The Court said Florida need not add two Hispanic-majority districts, a move opponents like Robinson Everett say repudiates a mandatory minority-drawing rule. The Shaw v Hunt case, involving Duke plaintiffs, awaits a Raleigh panel ruling after Supreme Court remand.
