Plaques honor remains of Cedar Grove cemetery victims
In New Bern, leaders Robert Johnson and Ben Watford push for plaques at Cedar Grove and Evergreen cemeteries to tell the story of relocated graves. An ECU team led by Charles Ewen confirmed remains were moved to a single mausoleum though only a handful of bones were found. A February 29 ceremony at Saint Peter A.M.E. Zion Church will unveil the plaques and mark a community healing effort. A commission may study further actions to honor the dead and prevent lingering Jim Crow remnants.
