North Carolina State Superintendent Mark Johnson proposes reviewing K 12 Common Core standards with a goal to end them and protect U S history classes amid new graduation requirements. He plans surveys of teachers and parents on language arts and math standards and notes change would require board reversal. Johnson, a GOP lieutenant governor candidate, cites public criticism and cites Florida as a model.
Memorials will recognize victims of a 1913 Jim Crow act with plaques at Cedar Grove and Greenwood cemeteries. Cedar Grove closed to black burials in the 1880s, Greenwood opened in 1882 for black residents, and in 1914 many Cedar Grove graves were moved to a Greenwood mausoleum to free space.
