New Bern Architect Rebuilds Duffy-Heward House After Flood
Michael Buchanan, a New York architect, chose New Bern to rebuild the two century old Duffy-Howard house after Hurricane Florence. Flooding destroyed its first floor, but a year and a half of restoration raised the home's living space by 1,200 square feet and pushed total costs to about 1 million dollars. Buchanan plans to move in yet weighs staying in the historic district as New Bern eyes growth likened to Charleston.
