Lawsuit Accuses Priest of Abuse and Diocese Conspiracy
A Rutherfordton teen who says he was 15 during 1989 1990 abuse at St Francis Episcopal Church in Asheville sues Rev J Faulton Hodge and the Western North Carolina Diocese for more than 130000. The suit filed in Buncombe County accuses church leaders of concealing misconduct. Hodge denies the charges and is barred from priestly duties pending resolution.

Final salute for 82nd's last WWI veteran Harrell
Fort Bragg memorial honors First Sgt. Charles Harrell the last surviving World War I veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division. Harrell died June 28 in Yuma at 95. his name was called in a roll at the ceremony as family members watched. His service began in 1917 with Company C, 325th Infantry, in the original 82nd Infantry Division.

RALEIGH AP A killer inmate Thomas Bonney 51 and accomplice James Stromer 48 escaped North Carolina Central Prison by sliding down a 4 foot chute into a 10 ton trash container during twice weekly pickup. Bonney returned to prison from Norfolk VA after arrest. Stromer remains at large. Bonney had been sentenced to death for murdering his daughter in 1988. the ruling was overturned for mental health considerations.
