Planning board to hold Aug 16 hearing on rezoning

Havelock Planning Board schedules 7:15 p.m. August 16 at City Hall for a public hearing on whether to recommend rezoning two Church Road and Miller Boulevard tracts from residential to highway commercial. About 25 to 30 residents attended. Linda Heaps notes the process aims for smart town growth. City commissioners set a separate 7:15 p.m. September 12 hearing. Vira Watson named Planning Board chair. she previously served as city clerk for 20 years through February 1993.

Drain clog and planned study loom for New Bern drainage

Roots and leaves clogged a 50 foot section of Pollock Street drainage last week. DOT crews failed to clear the line after the jet device broke. City officials seek a 271500 drainage study funded partly by a state grant and the Army Corps of Engineers to map a two year rebuild plan.

Waste grinder back on line after May fire at New Bern yard

The New Bern yard waste facility is back in business after a May fire damaged the grinder. Public Works Director Danny Meadows said stockpiles were wiped out by a rush after the news. The grinder has been repaired and the site reopened with hours Mon-Fri 8 am to 4 pm and Sat 9 am to 2 pm. Repair cost was 58000 dollars and an insurance claim has been filed.

Women injured in wrecks remain in Pitt Co hospital

Two women injured in recent accidents near Vanceboro stay hospitalized at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Shauna Weatherly Cooper, 45, in critical condition after a head-on collision on NC 43 north of Vanceboro. Betrina Yvonne Jenkins, 23, has improved to serious, after her vehicle was broadsided on US 17.

Frazier seeks judge removal over racial prejudice claim
