Sun Coast Gondolier (Newspaper) - March 15, 1980, Venice, Florida4?Sun coast gondolier Venice. Florido saturday. Morch 15, 1980 Magee gets shillelagh award tax reminders in the mail continued from Page 1 and Frances headed for the Adirondack area where her family had maintained a summer Home for three generations and they purchased a Small Home. Chris always told friends that the sewage system was an outhouse on the Back porch for Winter and another in the Yard for summer. He did most of the remodelling of the House himself finding out that he could be Carpenter plumber and electrician As Well As Engineer. The couple simmered there and wintered wherever Chris worked. The last was during world War a when he was charged with converting a foundry Plant from an Iron operation to one processing magnesium. In 1947, the Mages made their move to Venice and started a life of involvement in this Small Florida Community. Frances was a doer and As with most wives she ended up getting Chris involved in some of her projects by volunteering him and his services. The Mages became affiliated with Venice Little theatre when it was founded in 1950, but it Wasny to until two years later that Chris found himself volunteered As scenery designer. He recalled that he had never seen a stage from the other Side of the footlights but from the sets left behind by the departed designer he managed to get by for a couple of years by improvisation. For 18 years vat sets had the Magee touch on a regular basis and on an intermittent basis after that. His most recent affair with Hammer and Nail in the backstage area was with the last vat production of but it is the Hospital which became the main focal Point for the Mages who were on the scene when the facility was first opened in the Worthington apartment building in 1950. Chris was asked to serve on the Board of trustees for the Little 14-bed facility and when he accepted he quipped that he a did no to really know any More about hospitals than i originally did about with his usual a do it attitude Chris started to learn something about hospitals and by the end of the first year was elected president of the Board. The addition of building space and sophisticated equipment was a continuous concern As crowds of people began coming into Venice. Spearheading fund raising for the Hospital was one of his activities. Chris is very proud of the fact that a except for a very Small amount of government Money the citizens built that Hospital. This is unique because there Arentt Many hospitals that can make that when Hospital auxiliary volunteers was organized shortly after the Hospital was getting off the ground Chris and Frances became part of the White knights and Pink ladies volunteers group. Frances was equally involved in hav and served three terms As president of the volunteers remaining Active until she died about 10 years ago. The audio pulmonary department at the Hospital was named for the couple. He was made a lifetime honorary member of the Board of trustees of the Hospital and until recently was a regular member of hav. Lately he has been on an a on Call Quot basis. He still pops into the hospitality shop each morning for breakfast with his Pink ladies and White knights when he Isnit behind the counter doing his thing As a Pearl divers in the sink. Along about 1969, Chris became involved with Venice area Art league and became a member of the Board of directors when they sought a Man with business know How. He served six years and one As president of the league. Out of his Art league years came one of his hobbies pottery. He had his own wheel and Kiln in the garage and enjoyed the feel of the wet Clay and creating a piece of pottery. His garage also served As a place for him to make candles which he made from old Candle pieces and donated to hav or Art league for their fund raising activities. He enjoys telling How he got involved in cooking after Frances used the old ploy on him about cooking Over a a hot he started to help out in the Kitchen. Head always had a yen for the culinary arts he said since he was about six years old. At one of the Art fairs of recent years Chris Magee took a turn at creating culinary Art foods for those who came during a two Day affair. Since he did not remarry after Frances died he has been doing his own cooking Over the years. His years As Hospital blood Bank president Are behind him but he still comes on Call when summoned by blood Bank coordinators when a Galloner of note is to receive a plaque and a picture taking session is needed. He also acts As master of ceremonies for the annual blood Bank dinner. Magee is a familiar character peddling his tricycle around town from his Home to the Hospital or the theatre and he plans to keep Busy in his retirement until he a 100 or More. When you visit the Art league see a performance at the theatre or visit or stay in the Hospital thank Chris Magee and others like him who come out of retirement to help the Community. Over 20,000 notices have been mailed advising that the deadline for payment without penalty is March 31. On april 1 taxes Are delinquent and a penalty of 3 percent is added to All real estate taxes and iv2 percent per month to All tangible taxes. As of feb. 29, More than 80 percent of Sarasota county a $55.9 million tax Roll had been collected which puts collections at a lower rate than 87.5 percent of last year. A much of the unpaid amount a Eger noted a is being held by the larger taxpayers in order for them to keep their Cash invested at today a High interest two taxpayers account for much of the unpaid amount general Telephone with More than $1,654,000 and Florida Power and Light with $978,000. Both companies advised mrs. Eger last november that they would be paying in March. General development has almost 40,000 parcels in Sarasota county and will also be paying those Bills at the end of March. When the general development Check is received the tax Bills will be validated by a new system. Eger explained that a through the use of computers in the county data processing department and corresponding machines of the Developer validating which took three employees two full weeks will now be done mrs. Eger expects the final collection percentage to be equal to last years. A it should be a Busy month for us a she noted. Reminder notices Are mailed to the owners of record on Jan. 1, 1980. A the certified tax Roll does not reflect ownership changes recorded after August a Eger noted a and the Law Only requires that the owner of january 1,1979, be 0 although the tax Bill clearly states that the old owner should Forward the Bill to the new owner and the Law says that the owner has sole responsibility for seeing that the Bill is received tax collector Eger one step beyond. A we Are dealing with people a she said a and people often done to realize How the Law affects by mailing the reminders to the new owners Eger Hopes to Alert Many persons to their final Chance for payment without penalty.
