Publix opens a new Nokomis Village location as part of area business expansion. The Nokomis store adds grocery service to the community, with shoppers able to access the familiar supermarket offerings at the new site.

The Sarasota County School Board named Bill Hancock, Brookside Junior High assistant principal since 1973, as the new Venice High School principal on a two year contract. He succeeds retiring Guy Rose after a selection from 14 finalists amid May interviews. Hancock is praised for his deep ties to the local school system and his familiarity with Sarasota County.
The Venice Area Chamber of Commerce calls for moderate income housing to support expected growth in Venice and surrounding areas. It cites Venice Hospital expansion adding 200 plus workers by 1982 and warns employers may curb plans without affordable housing. The group fears I 75 exits will worsen the labor housing squeeze and argues housing at reasonable rates will attract new industry and stabilize taxes.
Venice condo residents have contributed over 290000 toward a 500000 expansion fund. Bill Gibson co chairs the fund and says more than 430 owners from 20 condominiums donated with nine months left to solicit. Donations also memorialize patient rooms and hospital furnishings across several condominiums.
