Venice Avenue widening moves forward on I-75 project

Construction on Venice Avenue east of U S 41 Bypass begins as part of the I 75 widening. East Venice Avenue becomes a single lane near the drainage canal while a new bridge over the canal is built by the county. Crews clear trees along Venice Farm Road in preparation for upgrading to a four lane highway over a 10.5 mile segment from River Road to U S 41 near North Port. Palmer family pushes for out of court settlement in county land feud

The Palmer family and Sarasota County chiefs moved toward a settlement after court battles over 325 acres near Osprey. Palmer reps offered 29 acres of The Oaks to the county and to cut mainland development from 941 to 540 units. Wald suit brings hospital favorable ruling

A federal jury in Tampa dismissed Dr. Sheldon Wald’s $10.5 million anti trust suit against Venice Hospital after three weeks of testimony. Wald, a Sarasota orthodontist, claimed a conspiracy to deny staff privileges to doctors renting office space opposite the hospital on South Nokomis Avenue. Hospital counsel denied the charges and called the suit a waste of time, with jurors finding no evidence supporting Wald’s allegations.

Bush for President opens Venice campaign office

The George Bush for President committee opened its first primary office in Venice with an open house at 216 South Tamiami Trail. O.E. Duke Schneider leads a staff that will register volunteers and supporters 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, serving Osprey Nokomis Venice Englewood and North Port. Venice Planning Commission Tabs Deny for Mahon Plat

The Venice Planning Commission recommended denying the Mahon preliminary plat for four building lots with a private street, noting it would lose the required 7,500 square feet per residential lot and citing inadequate sewer and water lines and a proposed T shaped street. It also approved a special exception to allow a drive up banking facility for First National Bank of Venice on the US 41 Bypass near Sonny's Barbecue and Arby's Roast Beef.
