South County holding jail debated as area grows
The Sarasota Sheriff’s Department operates a South County holding jail at Venice Police Station with eight cells used for processing suspects before transfer to the main Ringling Boulevard jail. Officials cite crowding and rising yearly inmate flow from about 400 in 1977 to 1,800–2,000 now, with calls to use the county facility for safety and efficiency.
