A Venice water plant worker John Henry Thompson was trapped for over an hour after his heel slipped on a narrow metal stairway behind the Venice Police Department. He jammed two fingers between stairs and a wall and cried for help until officers heard him. He was treated at Venice Hospital.
Venice Fire Department and South Sarasota Ambulance Service rushed to a scene where a city worker trapped in a stairwell was freed after more than 30 minutes using a hydraulic prying tool. He was transported to Venice Hospital for cast protection on two damaged fingers and other injuries.
Venice City Council on Monday put off action on City Manager Dale Rieths 105000 budget proposal for his department and asked for hearings before final approval. Rieth seeks an 8 percent salary rise for himself and raises of 25 and 15.3 percent for his assistant and secretary. The council noted a 22 percent past raise for Rieth amid objections. Public hearings will precede final budget action as the panel reviews the 1981-82 plan and considers a 161000 October 1 1982 surplus.
