The Sarasota County Charter Review Board proposes expanding to seven commissioners from seven districts with a limit of two four year terms if approved. The panel reversed prior actions, debated district versus at large elections, and noted a county commissioner attended the session. A monkey sighting report and local wildlife notes follow in the same column.
In a winter feature the Sun Coast Gondolier reviews 1940s Venice records. Former Mayor Louis Suter and ex mayor Clyde Higel dispute who favored the Venice Army Air Field lease. WAA letters in 1947 show efforts to secure a lease and define city rights.
Eugene Derda of South Venice transformed a lightning-scarred silk oak trunk behind his home into a life sized brown bear and two reclining lions. A retired watchmaker born in Germany, he carved the figures over a month starting February 11, using the trunk as both art and a hitching post for laundry.
Sarasota County Commissioner Beverly Clay told the Rotary Club of Venice Nokomis that clean air and a healthy environment matter more than high revenues. She noted her long service since 1974, role as vice chairman, and recent liaison appointment. She spoke on growth, a 1975 ordinance cutting unincorporated population projections, and provided area population figures.
Sarasota County plans to regroup unserved areas into fire districts with county contracts to support volunteer departments like South Venice. County official Mike Frasier says citizen input is awaited as plans, still developmental, identify prime sites including South Venice for potential funding and expansion to full-time service.
