Charles B Greer a 35 year old Corinth blacksmith died from blood poisoning after being bitten during a fight with Geo Gray a hotel employee. The coroner will hold Gray responsible. Gray has disappeared after the victim’s death.
May 24 the reichstag adopted the meat bill by 163 to 125 votes. The action follows heated debate over supply and price controls affecting Berlin residents and local industry.
Industrial Commission report to Congress calls for stricter state labor laws including banning employment of children under 14 in certain industries and prohibiting women and ports from work. Proposals cover age limits for railway telegraph operators and safety exams for color blindness. Also discusses enforcement and equity court powers and urges labor bureaus in all states. It also notes Morgan speech on Philippine bill and canal issues, plus a pension for Capt Gridley’s widow.

Brussels notes rising clerical politicking with Father Daens urging Liege Charleroi and Tournai electors to oppose Catholic Conservatives as hypocrites. King Leopold visited the Paris exposition incognito. Royal yacht Alberta reaches Rouen by weight.
The Methodist conference debated moving the amusement ban from discipline to church ad vice. Dr Howes opposed any change arguing it would show retreat, while Mains supported the majority, Payne the minority. A censure was voted on Bishop Hurst following a memorial by college presidents.
The Presbyterian General Assembly named a committee to answer questions from the presbyteries on revising the confession. Ministers listed include Herrick Johnson Chicago and Samuel J. Nicolls St Louis, with surgeons of synods and elders named from several states. Herrick Johnson’s Peoria overture helped persuade commissioners to test the plan.
In St. Louis on Sunday night, at 7:00, three street car workers Thomas Bullivan, Patrick O Connell, and James Sullivan were shot while walking in Lafayette Park by two unknown men. By standers say the strike participants offered no provocation and the act appears deliberate. Panic followed as crowds dispersed. streetcar service ran lighter than the prior week with fewer passengers carried.
Leavenworth Kan May 28 the Missouri and Kansas bridge over the Missouri river near Leavenworth was sold at auction by a U S district court master commissioner. Simon Stern for Emanuel L Risor New York bid 916000 the upset price. The bridge built in 1876 cost 600000. A mortgage foreclosure suit filed February 583000 by J H Shanklin trustee was ordered sold by Judge Hook.

In Des Moines on May 26 Mrs Theodore Birney of Washington DC president of the Mothers Nations Congress interrupted the session to demand that crying infants be kept away for speakers discussing child training morals temper and body. The mother exited to a model kindergarten run with the congress. The organization amended its constitution to allow each state to send a president and three delegates plus extra representatives for larger clubs.
Three men killed and several seriously injured when brakes failed on an Akron and Cuyahoga Falls rapid transit suburban work train loaded with gravel descended a steep grade. Names of the deceased are Jack McMahon Michael Pendera and K Welker. Injured include Noah Updesraft and Jack Haley with others unnamed.
Chicago observers describe a ruinous blaze at the Bancroft on Calumet Avenue near Twenty Ninth Street. Residents and workers, about two hundred people, gathered amid ashes seeking food and shelter as the fire cut through the loge area and destroyed the structure.
