In Bridgton New Jersey on June 4 a mob of about fifty masked men burst into Salter Alford's home with revolvers drawn, dragged him away to a wood, and it is believed he was hanged or tarred and feathered. His wife is dead inside, two children cry, and a searching party seeks Alford's fate amid rumors that his wife’s death was linked to abuse.
Manila June 4 Capt Roberts of the Thirty fifth regiment and his two companions captured at San Miguel de Mayumo in Luzon on May 29 remain prisoners of the rebels who have informed the Americans they intend to treat them well and in accordance with the laws of war
Flora Indiana May 29 Mills Sellars eight, son of Thomas Sellars, living near Sedalia, was accidentally shot by his brother Homer thirteen. They found an old revolver they thought unloaded and fired it in the yard. The butt entered the younger boy's head near the left ear and passed through. He died within thirty minutes before aid arrived.
Twenty three warships and 11,000 Russian troops are at Taku with 14,000 more held at Port Arthur. European powers consider uniting action to safeguard interests as tensions rise over China Boxers and foreign guards. Four foreigners killed and several wounded after Boxer assault near Pao Ting Fu as relief expedition moves toward Tientsin.
Washington dispatch says Gen Otis and Gen Schwan will meet Secretary Root to discuss sending three cavalry regiments to the Philippines. MacArthur has pressed for more cavalry, and the War Department plans to act after Root obtains Otis and Schwan views. Regiments and timing to be decided, likely after June elections. In parallel, Cleveland mills of the American Steel and Wire Co. shut down, leaving about 1,000 workers idle with no clear reopening date.
New York June 4 delegates to the national convention of the Socialist Labor Party gather at the Grand Central Palace. Attending are representatives from California Connecticut Illinois Indiana Kentucky Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Missouri New Jersey New York outside city Ohio Pennsylvania Rhode Island Texas Virginia Washington and Wisconsin among others.
Washington June 4 The House defeated a joint resolution to amend the constitution to empower Congress to regulate trusts. Vote 134 yeas 151 nays, three-fifths required. Several Democrats and two Republicans crossed party lines. paper lists breakouts and speeches by DeArmond Littlefield and McCall.
Cincinnati June 4 Rev W W Thoburn Methodist bishop of India is at Christ hospital in Cincinnati with exhaustion of the brain caused by long labors in India. Mrs Thoburn also ill.
Berlin reports various German newspapers object to Lord Roberts proclamation terms for the occupation of Pretoria. Critics stress humane treatment of non combatants versus combatant burghers and warn that punishing Boers after peace would provoke protest from civilized powers.
