Pioneer Merchant Jacob Hoke Dies at 85 in Sullivan
Jacob F. Hoke, longtime Sullivan resident and banker, died at his Sullivan home Sunday evening. Born August 15 1859 in Haddon township he served in the 85th Indiana Regiment and later built a hardware and banking career. Survived by wife Ellen two daughters Helen preceded in death a stepson French Long and other descendants. Funeral held at his residence with Rev. J A Sumwalt. burial at Center Ridge cemetery. He helped organize Sullivan County Bank later Sullivan State Bank and served as its president before retirement.

County's Oldest Resident Passes Here Last Week
Uncle Tom Stanfield a Sullivan County pioneer and the county's oldest resident died at his home last Wednesday at a remarkably advanced age. He and his wife Barbara settled here in 1852, when Sullivan's population was just over three hundred and the courthouse site was a forest. They built a log cabin around 1654 on the Stanfield homestead site.

Everett Roberts aged 85 died Saturday evening at his parents home after an extended cancer illness. The funeral was held Monday at the Roberts home with Rev. R. W. Hoffman officiating. Burial followed at Center Ridge cemetery. A blacksmith by trade, he was a member of Vandalia Local No. 28 and had worked as a blacksmith at that time. His wife died last August and since then he lived with his parents.

Shepherd Brothers Sentenced to Life in State Prison

He was a telegraph operator employed at Princeton before moving to Kansas. He was twice married first to a Beard. He was agent for the M E T Railroad at Hiattsville Kansas for many years. Nineteen years ago he moved to Parsons with his family to reside and was engaged in insurance and real estate there.

Barnhart Arrests After Farmington Auto Theft
A Fairbanks township volunteer posse led by Dr. Dean Bradbury captured George Barnhart of Jasonville and Walter Barnhart of Farmersburg after a 30 minute pursuit east of Fairbanks. The trio faced auto banditry charges with disputed claims and bonds set at 2460 and 2500 respectively. Ed Barnhart of Farmersburg was later jailed on implicated involvement.
