Hymera Man Receives Carnegie Medal for Heroic Rescue
The Carnegie Hero Commission awarded O Ray Ward of Hymera a medal for saving David Brannon from suffocation on July 31 1914. Ward, then 21, crawled into a well to tie a rope and pull Brannon out after a powder blast trapped him, while Brannon was overcome by smoke. Ward now lives with his mother in Hymera.
