J Parker of Merom indicted by grand jury on six charges in relation to Aegal Liquor Sales. Authorities pursue case details as records indicate multiple counts and further proceedings are pending.
Indictments include Onry Barnhart George Barnhart Wiley Walters and James O Johns for murderous intent. Dr John J Parker of Merom arrested with bond. George Curry of Palestine charged with unlawful possession of intoxicating liquid. Bonds posted for Tom White W A White and Isaac Cooper on liquor violations. Barnharts and Johns face assault with intent charges over deputy marshal Robert Ahan's case. Cilla McGlone bound on two indictments for wife desertion.
The Terre Haute Tribune reports a Friday meeting of voters in the Fifth ward at 1243 North Girth Street. P. B. May urged strong turnout and forceful discussion while W. B. Edmonds, a Republican, blasted the Piety-Whitaker machine and urged support for the Old ng candidate in Vandalia.
Joseph P. Durham of Indianapolis has been elected treasurer of the Presbyterian Synod of Indiana meeting at Peru. A longtime leader with the Daniel Stewart Drug Co and Public Welfare Savings & Loan, he previously served as treasurer for the synod. Durham also chairs the ministerial relief and sustentation committee.
Local grocers sign an accord to close stores at seven pm during October November December January February and March. Saturdays and pay nights exempt. Signatories include J. A. Knotts & Co. County Clerk Railsback and Justice Robert Kirkham issued a marriage license and conducted the ceremony in a tent where the groom John Courtney Miles, 48, a retired farmer, and bride Jennie Alvira Botton, 58, a Shelburn photographer, were wed after the groom could not reach the clerk’s office.
Programs have been received for the forty eighth semi annual convention of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons to be held at Indianapolis on November 18 19 and 20. On the reception committee are Ransom W Akin of this city and Edley W Rogers of Carlisle.
A circuit court jury ruled in favor of Stella Burris on Wednesday in the matter of Burris versus August Zurheide, finding for the plaintiff in the bastardy case.
County Agent A W Hayes outlines how Sullivan County soils formed with little limestone, creating acid tendencies. He explains the need for lime and calcium carbonate to neutralize acids, the role of loess and organic decay, and how nitrification continually generates acidity that must be balanced through liming.
The Women’s Relief Corps fifth district meets at Terre Haute tomorrow in the First M. E. church starting at 9 a.m. Dinner will be served. Mrs. Emma Reed of this city is senior vice president and many local Relief Corps members plan to attend.

The final of six Saturday fairs drew a large crowd with strong exhibits across departments. County Agent Hayes and poultry judge Roy Coyner praised the entries. The Herman Heien farm ran the fair and collected top prizes for livestock, poultry, grains, vegetables, and baked goods. A new M.A. Well No. 6 drilled by Ohio Oil on the Heien farm yielded 1000 to 1500 barrels daily, marking the sixth big productive well in Fairbanks township.
At a Hymera convention on October 21 the Bull Moose slate named William J. Williams for councilman in Ward Two without his consent. Williams says he is a staunch Republican and refuses the nomination, insisting he is not a Bull Moose candidate.
Indianapolis dispatch reports John Dressell a saloon keeper at 12 West Market street was the driver who struck Abe Wolf 14 of 117 West McCarty street on Pennsylvania street yesterday afternoon. Wolf escaped injury though his bicycle needed repair. Dressell took Wolf home and the bike to a shop.
Alex Rose a 42 year old leader at Shirley Hill mine No 3 likely died after slate collapsed Monday before noon. He was rushed to St Anthony's hospital in Terre Haute with severe injuries including a broken leg jaw and facial wounds. Rose leaves a wife and one child.
Frank Hoe of Indianapolis and George Coogan of Evansville have signed for a ten round bout in Shelburn next Monday night. Both fighters are popular locally and the card promises a solid matchup.
The Lee farm near Terre Haute, 280 acres across from the Rod and Gun club, was sold this week to Joseph Mullikin of Terre Haute and William Riggs of Sullivan Indiana for about 20000 dollars. Mullikin took 240 acres, Riggs 40 acres along the gravel road. The property, owned by Mr and Mrs Marshall G Lee, sits above a coal seam whose rights were sold last year to the Talleys of Terre Haute.
Shelburn area report notes E. M. Kerlin of Sullivan has begun laying the pipeline from the Dix gas wells under his Shelburn franchise. A large supply of pipe has arrived and crews aim to finish before cold weather.
The Ministerial Association of this city has reorganized and elected officers. Rev G W Titus is president and Rev Phillip Fries is secretary and treasurer. Rev W E Gray is listed and retiring officers include Rev P C Lisman president Rev J H Mc Arthur vice president and Rev Clive McGuire vice president and treasurer.
Word reaches here that Manford Otto formerly of this city, now in the harness trade in Los Angeles, Cal., sustained stock loss from smoke and water in a wholesale district fire. He was born and reared here and once managed the Stratton Harness Company.
Effie Douthitt daughter of Cassius G Padgett a well known farmer of Haddon township has filed a suit for divorce in the circuit court from her husband Carl Douthitt She charges cruel and inhuman treatment Douthitt is a son of Ed Douthitt of this city and is employed as a book keeper in Indianapolis
Henry Agh a 55 year old teamster from Carlisle died suddenly Monday after being attacked in front of his home yard. He was rushed indoors but died shortly after. He leaves a wife and family.
The Ohio Oil Company drilled well No. 5 on the Herman Heien farm in Fairbanks township reaching 660 feet with 40 feet of fine oil sand. The well produced about 400 barrels daily after being shot. Other drills targeted Riley Ransford farm in Turman township and John W. Shepherd farm in Turman township. Kennedy Oil Company hit a fair producer on the Wood farm in Curry township. Additional wells planned on Tom Houck farm and other nearby lands with several notable names involved in leases and contracts. A dry hole was logged on the Clare Merrill farm, while Lovelace and Ferree farm near six miles northwest reported 730 feet oil sand and gas during drilling.
Track laying crews finish the grade from Peerless mine to Milred mine on the C. B. & E. I. Ry. A workforce is now installing the track and the Mildred mine, shut for some time, is reported to reopen.
Attention is directed to William W. Watson of Fairbanks township and his advertisement on page three. Watson will add a sale next Monday afternoon offering fifty fine Duroc Jersey Hogs, a rare chance to secure good stock.
Jerusalem Chapter No. 81, R. A. M., will be inspected Monday night by John W. Glendenning of Indianapolis. A class will receive the Mark Master degree. Next Tuesday night Glendenning will inspect Sullivan Council No. 73, R. & S. M.
County Treasurer W. W. Howard sold bonds totaling 4825 dollars for the Lyman Pounds gravel road system in Fairbanks township. The four and one half percent improvement bonds are non taxable and were purchased by Citizens Trust Company.
W. H. Bland and Mrs. Nancy Hunt with son Oscar traveled to Mt. Carmel on Saturday to spend several days with T. F. Bland and his family.
Washington political observers note dwindling progressive strength in New Jersey as President Wilson’s favor for Fielder clashes with Roosevelt backup for Colby. Colby’s 6000 votes to Osbourne’s 4000 win highlights internal splits while Stokes challenges Fielder amid waning bull moose momentum and bipartisan anti-Wilson sentiment.
Report by Carrie Yeager, cooperative weather observer, shows weekly temperatures from 75 to 42 degrees with mostly cloudy days. Rainfall recorded was .40 inches on October 17.
Shelburn reports Terre Haute Central League club signed pitcher DeBaun who won 24 of 25 games this season. The team also inked Shelburn players Tommy Stevenson George Wheeler and Hosea Siner.
Mrs. John M. Oldham of New Lebanon was in the city on Saturday for a visit.
The party selected Joe S. Schroeder for mayor, Ed P. Lacey for clerk, and council tickets by ward. In orderly ballots Noah M. Drennon and Schroeder vied for mayor with Schroeder receiving 97 votes to Drennon’s 45.
In a Wednesday night gathering at Bass's barber hall, the Socialist party nominated a city ticket with Elmer B. McKee for mayor Elam Orr for clerk George W. Gastineau for Council first ward John H. Page for Council second ward John Stultz for Council third ward and Christopher C. Bowers and Henry Cottingham for at large councilmen.
In Farmersburg on October 21 the three parties Democrats Republicans and Socialists each announced a full town slate. Democrats name E. W. Jennigs as trustee first ward Hosea Stewart for clerk and treasurer Otis All for marshal. Republicans nominate EH G. Denney trustee first ward S H Bolinger clerk and treasurer Ed Cowen for marshal. Socialists place J M Hopewell trustee first ward Hosea Stewart for clerk and treasurer Robert Mahan for marshal.
Merom residents on October 21 selected two tickets for the upcoming election. The Citizens ticket lists Ab Pinkston for alderman first ward Charles Vickery for second ward M C Manifold for third ward Farl Coy ner for clerk and treasurer Winfred Reid for marshal. The Law and Order ticket names Asbury Page alderman first ward Whart Berry second ward John Kelly third ward Louis Foy clerk and treasurer Capt Chas Boon marshal.
In Dugger on October 21 the Democratic ticket includes Marshal Shelley Potter, Clerk Ocie Wall, Councilman 2nd Ward Frank Burkhart, Councilman 38th Ward William Brewer Sr. The slate outlines key local positions for the upcoming election.
E. M. Kerlin, granted a Shelburn natural gas franchise, plans to lay mains from the W. T. Dix land wells northwest of Shelburn and expects to supply customers by mid November.
