Thomas R. Marshall Democratic candidate for Indiana governor spoke to about 1000 at the courthouse park in Sullivan. He criticized Republicans, contrasted Lincoln era ideas, and cautioned about trusts while praising Bryan and Democracy.
Two Democratic speakers in Turman township campaign misstate the county option law claiming it repeals the Moore remonstrance law and would force saloons in all townships if Sullivan county votes wet. The cited act clarifies it does not affect remonstrance law and remains supplemental.
He refused to veto any bill unless vicious or immoral and denied taking brewery funds for his campaign. He urged a governor removal power for official misconduct and noted Watson would not say his stance. He said ministers have no special rights and should preach not march in politics. He spoke again at Shelburn to a larger crowd, repeating his Sullivan remarks.
Prominent Sullivan attorney Fred Fenton Bays and Miss Marie Louise Reitz of Evansville were married yesterday morning in Evansville. After the ceremony they left for a brief honeymoon and will reside in Sullivan soon. Bays is the youngest son of the late John S. Bays and a noted local figure. Mrs. Bays is a leading Evansville socialite who has appeared in Sullivan society circles.
John KE Lamb of Terre Haute will speak in Hymera as Democratic vice chairman. Reports say Hearst reporters in Terre Haute are investigating Lamb for past actions including a street car strike and links to trusts and large corporations. Hearst attacked Kern and Taggart in Los Angeles calling them gamblers and corporate allies.
Carlisle Indiana October 6 Republicans organize the Taft and Sherman Club the first in Sullivan County at Carlisle Haddon township nominating John A Cooper chair Charles D Nalley secretary Arthur D Cutler treasurer. Next meeting October 8 7 30 pm Carlisle opera house. A G McNabb present endorsed by county Republicans Bert Walters candidate for sheriff spoke and was endorsed. Dr McBride candidate for coroner and Haree candidate for survivor mentioned.
Curry township and Shelburn Republicans plan an October 15 visit by Jim Watson governor candidate. A glee club and Shelburn band will perform at Sebring park at 7 p m. Watson will discuss his labor record in congress and the new county local option law at Sullivan courthouse park in the afternoon, drawing large working class crowds.
In Shelburn on October 2 the South Curry Republican Club was formed at Gaskins hall with Dr. Harper presiding. W L Laurent elected president and W C Lawrence secretary and treasurer. Laurent spoke, a glee club was authorized, and plans set for Watson’s Oct 15 reception at Shelburn ball park.
In a private letter John S. Rogers of Seattle writes that Bryan is a state joker and Taft is a man of steady purpose. He predicts Taft could win most states west of the Mississippi, notes canal and Cuba work favoring the party, and urges voters to back Republican policies for safety and prosperity.
In Shelburn October 6 Thomas R Marshall warned that a Taft victory would bring a quick shift to monarchy and urged that corporations and trusts undermine democracy. He claimed the people must rule by the torch and the sword, aligning his remarks with socialist critique.
Governor Hanly challenged Democratic nominee Thomas R. Marshall during a Music Hall address in Crawfordsville to reply within ten days on repealing the county local option law. He read a bill repealing the Sept. 26 1908 act and criticized Marshall for avoiding a direct stance on signing or vetoing such legislation.
The Evening Mohawk prints a harsh editorial defending the Republican organization in Sullivan County and denying a “corruption fund” in local races. It accuses The Times of unfounded claims and notes Democratic primary elections have sometimes relied on money and boodle, while suggesting some Democratic members tampered with ballots.
Edgar House sues Dering Coal Company for personal injuries. Thomas Lightfoot sues Jackson Hill Coal and Coke Company. Ellen Perry sues Mildred Yocum Nellie Yocum and others to quiet title. William H. Crowder Sr sues William O Thornberry Edgar S Crowder on note and mortgage.
Samuel Phegley Webb Milam and A E B Martz plan a large 4100 foot ditch on Richard Milam’s farm Carlisle Indiana to drain Milam pond. The channel will empty into the river near Hyatt's ferry as announced October 6.
Mrs Thomas B Springer wife of Captain Thomas B Springer died yesterday morning at 8 o'clock at her home near New Lebanon after an extended illness with dropsy She was the daughter of the late Martin Merry a county pioneer She and Captain Springer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last December and she was active in New Lebanon MEL church duties The funeral arrangements had not been announced at press time
The annual Sullivan County Sunday schools convention will be held at Christen church in this city on Friday with about four hundred workers attending. State secretary Yoo Y. Cladfpeniug will give morning afternoon and evening addresses as leaders outline the program including devotions lectures committee appointments and reports on teacher training and house to house visitation.

American Express has started services on the Southern Indiana railroad. The company will collect and deliver articles shipped over that line, replacing the former Southern Express which did not handle collections or deliveries in this area.
John B. Hawkins of Cass township purchased the Sarah M. Stewart residence on South Main street for 2000 dollars. The deal was made by Mattix and Drennon.
Ollie Mc Cracklin was crushed by slate at the St. Clair mine in Farmersburg around 9 AM Saturday. He sustained severe bruising and lacerations to the head face and back but escaped fatal injury.
Drury Holt a teamster living in the southwest part of town died Monday at the hospital. Local authorities have begun inquiries into the death as neighbors report no immediate foul play.
The Evening Mohawk's reporter claimed James S. Sherman's special train paused in Sullivan with a brief crowd hoping to glimpse Mr. and Mrs. Nick Longworth. Observers said Nick was at breakfast and Mrs. Longworth was not aboard, as the couple had exited at Evansville en route to Cincinnati.

Shelburn Indiana October 6 The Chowning family reunion gathered five miles west of town with Rev J A Chowning Lewis H Chowning and sisters Ruth McDonald and Nancy Pittman present. Neighbors brought baskets for a bountiful dinner following a short address by the Rev Mr Chowning recounting childhood days at the gathering place.
Miss Mary Haughton visited Vinccennes after school and stayed until Sunday. Hudson Alsman was at home Saturday. Examinations occurred Friday. Rev Barbie, Carlisle Christian church minister, visited Monday evening. The seniors plan a second class meeting at Miss Ruby Curtis home six miles west of town. Ruby is a class member and expects a good time.
Republican vice presidential candidate James Sherman arrived in Sullivan Monday at 10 15 am aboard a special train. The stop lasted five minutes for orders, with only a few locals on hand to greet the party. Mr and Mrs Longworth accompanied the group to Evansville before continuing to Cincinnati.
Henry Hines of Carlisle Indiana sold his 53 acre farm for 5000 dollars to William L. Wampler of Bruceville. He will grant possession February first and plans to move to Colorado next spring.
Roy Shepherd of Oaktown spilled red paint while painting near A F Martz farm west of Carlisle Indiana. The paint was eaten by Bert Barker’s valuable cow and she became ill and died before a vet could determine the cause.

Carlisle Indiana October 6 The Carlisle Clay and Coal company mine caught fire Saturday morning and efforts to extinguish it failed. The fire is sealed in and the mine filled with dense black smoke. Loss to the company expected to be large.
Shelburn October 6 Aunt Sally Mason oldest Sullivan county resident celebrated her 100th birthday at her Wilfred home aided by many descendants. Born October 5 1808 in Staunton county Ohio she moved to Sullivan county as a child and has lived there long. The event featured family, music, large tables of food and many valuable gifts as friends wish her continued health and years ahead.
A remonstrance against liquor license applicants from Jefferson township was filed Friday and deemed sufficient by county commissioners. It lists 332 voters out of 440 total in the township.
