Mrs. Emmeline Yaw, 75, died at her daughter’s Farm ersburg home from inanition. Funeral held in Vigo county with Rev. Couchman officiating. The issue also notes a Liberty funeral, early settlers, and local business changes as Farmersburg Bee moves and buys a folding machine. Ed Akin leads big game hunts in Carlisle area with trips to Indian Territory.
PaxTon Nov. 21 Mr and Mrs John W Cox of this town ship have decided there is no place like Sullivan county They sold a 65 acre farm southwest of here and bought 105 acres in Maryland for 3700 but returned to Paxton to buy a pod e and lot and reside Rev Daniel Ryan of Carlisle will begin special meetings at the Methodist church tomorrow evening The new school building is ready for plasterers and will be ready for occupancy by year’s start
Charles A. Power died Saturday at his Terre Haute home after an extended illness aged 67. He served in Co D of the 31st Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. Survived by a wife, three sons, two daughters, and his father William H. Power. Funeral and burial were held Monday in Terre Haute.
The Sullivan Union, with John McNaughton, prepares a metropolitan style Christmas edition. It will detail Sullivan county resources, industry, and profession, with heavy illustrations all engraved in-house. The paper aims to boost business and flood the county with circulation as a premier advertising medium.
Oscar Smith suffered a broken arm at the Shelburn steel tipple mine when he was pinned between a mule and a car. Dr J B Maple treated him. Greek Jimmy Ryan and Jerry Murphy seek a return fight in Shelburn under Marquis of Queensberry rules. Mrs George White died of typhoid aged 25, with three children. Dr J H Wrork shows improvement after typhoid fever. Carlisle Odd Fellows lodge delegates attend Indianapolis grand lodge session.
The Peoples State Bank of Sullivan, capital stock of 100000 dollars with 64 shareholders, plans a Thursday morning opening at the south west corner of the public square. George R. Dutton serves as president with Joshua Beasley as cashier and Joe T. Akin as vice president. Directors include John T. Hays William Powell and others in the county’s business community.
The Indianapolis Southern railroad completed the Richland creek viaduct near Bloomfield enabling trains to run from Indianapolis to Switz City. The through line to Effingham connects with Illinois Central for New Orleans and Chicago, serving Sullivan with a 95 mile trip in about three hours and opening direct routes to St Louis New Orleans and Chicago.
Mrs Clara Bedell who has resided here for some time has moved to Coffeyville Kansas where she will make her future home.
Henry Gillum a blacksmith at the Superior coal mine fourteen miles west of Dagger was instantly killed Monday morning when he fell from the shaft top to the bottom. The 275 foot shaft left him with fatal injuries. His 15 year old son witnessed the death and Gillum left a wife six children and a grandchild. A brother worked nearby. Last summer Gillum’s eight year old daughter burned to death at the Gillum home.
Bloomfield November term opens as Charles E. Henderson takes over from Judge Orion B. Harris after six years on the bench. Harris moves to a special judge role in cases where Henderson has been counsel.
Melvine Boone, a miner at Shirley Hill mine No 1, suffered a crushed arm and broken fingers when the cage rose instead of lowered. He endured about thirty minutes of agony before the engine could be started to free him.
