Sheriff Walters left Sullivan county after noon for Shelburn to stay the charge while illegal booze sales and related lawlessness are addressed. He will remain on site in Shelburn to restore order amid bitter conflict between bootleggers and residents determined to enforce the law and curb arson threats.
James O Hughes a prominent Hamilton township farmer died last Sunday night after an extended heart illness. Born November 4, 1837 he was the son of pioneer Canady Hughes. He married Caroline Wells in 1862 and leaves two sons Charles and Frank and a daughter Laura in Sonoma California. Surviving siblings include Robert, Wesley, Ransom, and others. Funeral services were held at the site residence and burial was at Center Ridge.
The Fourth Assistant Postmaster General warns Sullivan Indiana that rural delivery routes No 2 38 4 5 6 7 9 10 and 11 may be withdrawn within ninety days if roads are not repaired and made passable. Route No 1 will be adjusted June 1 to include new junctions and residents Herbert Sinclair and others are asked to prepare boxes for the change.
A six foot concrete walk from the corporation line on the south side of Washington street to Center Ridge cemetery is funded by a $2,800 donation drive led by C. J. Sherman W. H. Crowder and W. R. Nesbit. An arch entrance will be built and a ten acre tract adjoining the cemetery was purchased from I. H. Kalley for future grounds improvement. Cemetery president Sherman aims to beautify the grounds and sell burial lots to support ongoing work.
Congressman John C. Chaney is appointed to the congressional inspection committee to visit the United States Military Academy at West Point immediately after Congress adjourns. Mrs Chaney will accompany him to Washington.
The Democratic 14th district counties Sullivan and Greene plan a Friday convention at Bloomfield to nominate a judge. Fred F Bays leads Sullivan with 17 votes, James M Hudson of Greene also has 17 votes, and a long deadlock is anticipated over the county rotation rule favoring Hudson.
Taylor Edwards formerly ran the Terminal saloon in the city and quarreled with Walter Nixon of Farmersburg on a southbound interurban at 6 30 last Wednesday. Edwards drew a revolver on Nixon, caused a panic, chased him into a store, then tossed the weapon into the baggage rack and was dragged along as the car sped. He was arrested by Farmersburg Marshal Lloyd and pleaded guilty, paying a fine.
Reverend George Hays was shot in the hip during a three cornered pistol duel at Shelburn near the E T H station. Curtis McCoskey and John Myers were arrested. bail set at 2000 dollars each. Preliminary hearing scheduled for next Saturday.
In Farmersburg on May 26 Rev. A. M. Couchman of the local Methodist church was thrown from a buggy when his horse bolted after a dog barked. He suffered severe leg bruises but stood with the aid of a cane. The four year old Jersey Wilkes colt and the buggy used in the incident were badly damaged.
Shelburn May 26 The residence of George Anderson was destroyed by fire around four AM Sunday as the family visited relatives. The blaze is believed incendiary with no accidental cause. Wets blame drys for the fire. Loss is insured. house and contents fully covered.
A special convention of miners and operators will be called to settle the coal miners strike in this district. Officials believe an agreement will be reached.
David Rankin of Tarkio Missouri writes friend Charles L Davis that he will attend the Republican national convention as a delegate and welcomes Sullivan county people to meet him. Rankin, born in Sullivan county near Fairbanks, via Henderson Illinois and Atchison Missouri, claims to own about 30000 acres of fertile river-bottom farms and directs with overseers while personally driving progress. He will stop at the Auditorium in Chicago.
Four cases from this county will be heard in the Indiana appellate court during the May Term. Cases listed include Houghton v Aetna Life Ins Co with McClure for appellant and Gardner for appellee, Hymera Coal and Mining Co v Mahan with Hays & Hays for appellant and Tichenor for appellee, Pritchett v Knox County et al with Hays & Hays for appellant and Downey for appellees, and Lloyd v Arney with Charles D. Hunt for appellant and Buff & Stratton for appellee.
Will H. Hays, prominent local attorney and former head of the Republican state committee speakers bureau in 1906, is re appointed to the role. He has opened an Indianapolis tied office here and will handle city duties until shortly before the election when he travels back for duties. The post is crucial for the forthcoming speaking campaign with top national orators slated to appear in Indiana.
Maurice Yeager, local observer, reports rainfall totals for the week ending May 24. Observations show dates with temperatures from 64 to 86 degrees and varying cloud cover from clear to cloudy.
Merom Indiana hosts a concert by the college and Sunday school orchestras aided by Graysville musicians on Friday May 29 at 8 o clock. A small admission is charged for the Sunday school orchestra benefit.
Will Hays of this city will deliver the memorial address at Merom next Saturday afternoon.
The Sullivan high school plans its commencement Friday evening at the Colonnade theatre. The 34 member class is the largest in school history and 35 diplomas will be awarded due to the death of Robert Lacey two days before graduation. William H Hawley Smith will give the address and music is provided by the Sullivan Orchestra and the high school choir under Miss McGuire. Reserved seats are on sale at Smock's drug store.
F Lee Williams and Ethel Hamilton eluded friends by secretly marrying in the Kupper Hotel parlor Kansas City then returning to Chanute aboard the plug. Williams manages the Hetrick Theatre and Airdome. Hamilton is new in town and popular among locals. They will reside in the west flat theater suites.
Mrs. Williams, a Sullivan county girl, has lived in Chanute Kansas the past year with her brother J F Hamilton. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Homer Hamilton of Fairbanks township and has many friends in the county.
Shelburn resident L. C. Carter aged 52 died at St. Anthony's hospital in Terre Haute after a gasoline explosion at Patton's restaurant. He was lighting lamps when the tank exploded, burning him severely. Funeral services were held at Little Flock, with expenses paid by Patton, John Myers, and other citizens. Relatives in Evansville were notified.
Locals met this afternoon in Shelburn to route and choose delegates to the Terre Haute convention tomorrow to settle the strike question.
