A crowd at a livery barn in Dugger watched coal miner John Neal shoot Al Isbell after Isbell attacked Neal and Geo Shipman during a confrontation. Neal, 28, acted in self defense and was not arrested as Isbell’s injuries were not serious and no charges are expected.
The surveying corps of the Indianapolis Southern railroad pitched tents at Sullivan and completed the final survey to the Keen farm east of town. Headquarters will stay in Sullivan until line completion in a few days, with grade stakes to follow toward Linton and Midland. Prominent backers including President Stevenson and Chief Engineer Hazelrigg have reviewed the route, and local business interests support the project.
The May term petit jury for Sullivan Circuit Court begins June 1 with jurors reporting June 8. Green Hill Coal Mines east of Sullivan announce an indefinite closure after a strike begun April 1. The dispute, described as unmatched locally, follows heavy investment and extended labor troubles. The closure harms Sullivan as many miners reside there, though operators say concessions were offered and grievances were unreasonable. Hope remains for a quick resumption.
David A. Murphy a former Fairbanks postmaster who vanished in March 1902 with 121 dollars in funds was sentenced in Indianapolis to two years in prison and fined to cover his shortage. He ran a general store then disappeared after a trip to Terre Haute leaving a suicide note alleged by his wife. The case stirred sensational interest in Fairbanks.
On May 25 relatives and friends numbering 28 gathered to honor Grandma Ward at dinner. J L Pleasant photographed the crowd including her sons Prof A M, W I, A J, Milo P, Morris Ward, daughter Mary Hill, and daughters-in-law. She received gifts and about $25 in money, and all wished her continued good health.

Freemont Voter Esq 5 B Wardell of Jackson township cast his first presidential vote for John C Freemont last Saturday and has helped elect a president every four years since then with two exceptions during Cleveland's elections. Born in Ohio, he moved to Greene county near Jasonville in 1863 and joined the 149th Indiana Volunteers before settling in Jackson township near Humeya after his army discharge.

The G A R the Woman's Relief Corps and the Daughters of Veterans filled Sullivan Christian church for annual Memorial Exercises. Reverend Francis delivered a dignified sermon from Acts 13 36 praising service to one’s generation and the valor of the boy in blue as banners and flowers created a solemn scene. A resolution of thanks praised church leaders decorators and the children who saluted the flag.
Leander Snapp files suit against the Evansville and Terre Haute railroad seeking 200 dollars damages for stock killed. The complaint alleges the defendants failed to maintain a fence.
Promoters W E Stevenson B E Rauh and Eli Marvin visited Friday night with Thos H Hazelrige and A S White to review proposed routes. Hazelrige favors a north side line possibly tunneling cemetery hill. Three routes have been surveyed south of the courthouse as survey crews moved from east of Bloomfield to John Newsom’s farm in Smith township.
The OGD Fellows Grand Lodge I O O F nominates officers including Grand Master Alexander Johnson and Deputy Grand Master Edwin Farrer from Rushville. Election for several posts is secure. the warden race remains competitive with November voting. A sale of the Odd Fellows Hall site was proposed at 300000 dollars but defeated 680 to 92. A by law revision committee will be formed, with no radical changes expected, to report in November.
C. J. Sherman, a prominent dry goods merchant, has purchased a fine Rambler automobile. Sullivan now owns three of the new buzz wagons, and by season's end the number may double as many residents consider purchasing machines.
J Smith Talley of Terre Haute via attorney John S Bays has secured nearly 7000 acres of Sullivan County mineral land, with 1200 acres taken last week for 51000. Owners receive about 250000 as options transfer. five to six mines will be sunk this summer, boosting Cass Township and county prosperity.
Indiana state mine inspector James Epperson says coal mine capacity will rise about 20 percent this year due to new tunnels and better machinery. He notes the industry is in its infancy with most growth expected in Sullivan and Greene counties and southern Indiana high grade deposits.
