Dr. John J. Parker of Merom pleaded guilty in circuit court to illegal liquor selling and was fined 25 dollars plus costs. Five other cases against him were dismissed by agreement. Francis Marion Brown died at his Turman township home after an extended illness. Born in Clarke County, he moved with his family in 1857 and lived near Carlisle. Survived by his wife Mary E. Cuppy, son Isaac E., step-daughter Chloe Burke, sister Harriet Brown, brother James Brown, and his Bible reading, prayer, and song habits defined his life. Funeral held May 9 at his residence with burial in Johnson cemetery. He left a last poem titled A Prayer about divine protection.
