Allen Gaines 31, mussel digger, drowned when his boat capsized while approaching Indiana shore north of the Illinois Central bridge. Though an expert swimmer he sank, likely from cramps in swift water. He leaves a wife and two children, and is a half brother of Mrs. Sam Hopewell of Gill township.

Sullivan Woman Dies in Indianapolis Hospital
Mrs. Mariah Ernest, wife of the late Joshua Ernest of Sullivan, died Thursday afternoon in an Indianapolis hospital after a surgical operation. Born in Kentucky as Mary Brown, she was 68. The funeral was held at the family residence and interment followed at Center Ridge cemetery. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Ernest served as state senator and Sullivan postmaster under the Cleveland administration. She was half sister of Wakefield Giles and aunt of Lizzie Merrick of Indianapolis.
