One Year At Indiana State Penitentiary Farm
The state penal farm near Putnamville marked its first anniversary since opening in April 1915. Trustees saw a vast transformation with 1,602 acres, 590 prisoners, and a growing complex including dormitories, kitchen, dining hall, administration and recreation buildings, six barns, eight farm dwellings, a water tank, and a power plant under construction. Convict labor funded the development, and a two mile switch from the Ma on railroad at Putnamville is planned for the summer. The farm’s equipment is valued at about 200000 dollars. Peak population reached 600 inmates, with almost 2000 convict prisoners housed in the first year. about 115 escaped, with one third recaptured and returned to prison or reformatory confinement for two to five years. Desertions are currently rare.
