County officials announce a military census with forty citizens scheduled to report for conscription registration at no cost. The notice emphasizes orderly processing and confirms the registry participation is voluntary.
Sullivan county conscription board members Sheriff Orville Hale County Clerk Dave Giles and Emergon Watson attended a state conference in Indianapolis led by Governor Goodrich. The gathering backed unpaid service for boards and outlined registration duties and penalties under the pending conscription act.
Mesha Hunt Eaton 86 a county native and longtime resident of the city died at his Beech street home from Bright's disease. He farmed near New Lebanon, helped build three local churches and was a Democrat with a keen mind. Survived by two children a sister and brother, funeral held at his residence with Rev. Scull. Burial at Center Ridge cemetery.
County Agent F L Wright received an offer to become first or second lieutenant. The proposal came via Captain Joseph Frazier, former commandant at the University of Missouri, where Wright trained and graduated in 1911. Wright declined the offer for now, preferring to continue his county work.
John Canary a farmer west of the city who was adjudged insane last week was refused admission to the Evansville insane hospital due to epilepsy. He was taken home five miles west of the city Thursday after threatening his wife and neighbors.

Caleb H Lester of this city receives notice of the marriage of his great nephew M Creighton Patton formerly of Graysville now of Sioux City Iowa to Miss Millie Hansen of Sioux City Iowa. The ceremony will be at First M E Church in Sioux City on April 10. The bridegroom is the son of Lemuel Patton of Turman township.
Mrs Francis E McClarion Lucas of 466 South Court street died Sunday morning after a short pneumonia illness at age 65. Born in Merom she lived in Sullivan county all her life, moving to Sullivan 49 years ago. Survives four children and one brother. Funeral Tuesday at 2 from the family home conducted by Rev S I Long. Interment Center Ridge cemetery.
The Boy Scouts of Hymera under Rev W B Niles will cultivate a five acre tract this summer. Ground will be planted in tomatoes and beans with Hymera Canning Company supplying the tomato plants and Vandalia Coal Company breaking the ground.
City Health Officer Dr T W Kennedy has received a letter from H E Barnard the state weights and measures commissioner outlining provisions of the new sale by weight law now in effect It covers fruits dried fruits vegetables cereals seeds nuts ice coal lime salt sugar butter lard meats and other weight sold items The law prescribes net weight or standard container measures for berries and related items and sets penalties up to 100 for third offenses with fines and 30 days imprisonment Exemptions include apples by barrel or box cranberries by barrel and farm products peddled by producers.
The will dated May 4, 1916, names executor W. R. Nesbit and witnesses C. J. Sherman and W. H. Eaton. Funeral expenses paid. household goods go to William Sanders, Lizzie Shaw, Mary E. Cole, and Mrs. Maude Hughes. Residue to Lillie McClellan of Denver. trusts and cash gifts to Christian church, Mary Howard, and Elizabeth Boone. Executors and beneficiaries include Mary E. Cole and others in Merom, Carlisle, Terre Haute, and Vincennes.
A city mass meeting on food conservation, called by May or Calvert, organized a group for producing and conserving food within the city limits. Charles H. Bedwell was elected chairman with A. G. McNabb as vice chair, J. W. Lindley secretary, and A. E. DeBaun treasurer. Committees were set to obtain vacant lots for gardening, enlist gardeners, and secure free seeds for the needy.
Mrs Henry Weissenbach of Columus Ohio came Monday to attend the funeral of her uncle Mesha Eaton and will return home today.
Governor James P. Goodrich addressed a full Christian church audience on the New Constitution and Indiana’s war mobilization. He traced state military history, urged tax reforms, and pressed for constitutional amendments on taxation and public offices. The event included a preaddress banquet and music by local ensembles.
Ten Sullivan business and professional men met at Citizens Trust to form a Sullivan Red Cross chapter. A petition for a charter was signed and sent to J. J. O Conner, director of the central division. Dr J R Crowder was temporary chairman and B T Lang was secretary treasurer. The signers included Crowder, Lang, Nesbit, Horne, Billman, Stewart, Smock, Hays, Bridwell and Batey.
A late Monday afternoon cyclone struck near Hyatt's Ferry, causing damage in the county. Emergency crews reported a twister moving through rural areas, with property damage and power outages affecting multiple neighborhoods. Authorities warned residents to stay away from downed lines and seek shelter.
A tornado originating at Hyatt's Ferry tore through Had don township late Monday afternoon causing heavy damage along a two mile stretch. It leveled barns and outbuildings on the Will Shepherd and Hays farms, injured Bert Barker, and felled trees and lines across the area. City reports from Carlisle noted damaged glass and downed lines, with total losses estimated in the thousands.
County Treasurer Gambill extends hours with extra clerks as tax payment deadline looms. Four days last week brought in $232,623.19, including $9,857.70 on Friday.
