A patriotic gathering was held here Thursday with flag-raising ceremonies and local attendees paying respect to national symbols. Participants included community leaders and residents gathered to honor the flag and the nation.
Rev. Horne of the Christian Church addressed a large Strong crowd urging wakefulness to the war crisis. Ceremonies included a 100 foot flagpole in the courthouse park, another flag raising at the Elks Home, and a Boy Scout flag presentation. The talk praised democracy, pledged unity for victory, and condemned Germany’s aims as a threat to liberty and peace.
The court reversed in one case and affirmed in another holding corporations cannot be prosecuted for paying money toward elections while officers of the corporation are liable. It upholds that the corrupt practices act applies to local option elections and makes corporate officers personally responsible for prohibited contributions.
Graysville annual graduation exercises were held in the school auditorium Saturday night. J M Laird president of Central Normal School Danville Ind spoke on The Middle West highlighting regional potential during the war. Diplomas were presented by Richard Park to Luella Eno Verna Stanley Elizabeth Pound Mabel Nowlin Harold Goin Golden Monk Orren Patton Edgar Ransford Bruce Coppage and Henry Ingersoll.
Miss Clesta H. Lance and Wal ter H. Dorris wed Sunday at the bride’s East Washington Street home with Rev. J. T. Scull officiating. Guests attended and a dinner followed. The couple departed for Toledo where Dorris heads his brother’s work.
John Canary, 69, a farmer from Turman township, was judged insane Saturday at an insanity inquest in Squire Lester's court. He was committed to the southern insane hospital at Evansville after being jailed here last week for a violent insanity.
A county convention of cattle feeders met yesterday at W. H. Jones farm in Gill township near Merom Station. Led by F. L. Wright, the event assessed the nationwide food production movement. Highlights included a tour of Jones cattle feeding plant, one of the nation’s largest, with seven seven head ready for market and a 1:30 pm program featuring a round table and addresses by John Clay of Chicago and Purdue University figures G. F. King and P. S. Richey.
A new coal field is opening near Pimento in Linton township led by W E Eppert. The No 5 Shelburn vein lies over six feet thick at 270 feet depth, with 600 to 700 acres under control. A tipple is under construction near the C and E L line. initial work supports about 159 miners, expanding to several hundred as development allows. The company plans 40 acres for miners' homes and a miners' train link to Farmersburg, projecting at least 25 years of production.
A large crowd gathered Saturday afternoon in Hymera for a flag raising ceremony. Speeches were given by Fred F Bays and W R Nesbit. A detach ment from Company B Terre Haute fired a salute as the banner rose. The Star Spangled Banner was sung by the crowd. The flag flew from a 70 foot pole.
Governor James P. Goodrich from Indianapolis will address on Indiana's Proposed New Constitution at the Christian church next Tuesday night. Church ladies will serve supper and a large crowd is expected. banquet tickets cost 50 cents each.
Turman Township Better Farming Club will hold its last regular meeting until fall at Graysville high school Friday evening. The program features the high school chorus, Providence String Band, a Sullivan high school address by FE C Snarr, a cornet solo by Thomas Mann, and an address on The Farmers Responsibility in the Nations Crisis by Charles H Bedwell.
Indiana states figures reveal 220,294 farms with 21.66 million acres and a mix of crops and produce. Wheat 329,689,675 bushels. corn 165,344,764. oats 61,626,790. apples and other fruits 1,869,263 bushels. onions 1,118,466 bushels. watermelons and cantaloupes valued at $328,130. State resources balanced for war effort as farmer families shift roles.
George Russell aged 71 a top worker at the Carlisle Coal and Clay Company mine in Carlisle died at Crowder hospital from injuries after a coal car rolled loose striking the car he was under. He was mangled with a spine injury and had an arm amputated at the hospital. He was married with a family.
New steel tipples rise at Vandalia Coal Company mines in Cass township named No. 12 and No. 17. When finished they will be the largest in the state and among the best equipped. About one hundred men will work on the construction.
Prosecuting Attorney Pigg ordered strict enforcement. Ray Davis was arrested Thursday for lacking a 1917 license on his vehicle. He pled guilty before Mayor Calvert and was fined twelve dollars plus costs.
T. E. Hoover, agent for the C. and E. I. Railroad, said Friday that all right of way under his jurisdiction had been engaged by various people for garden purposes. The railroad company announced Wednesday that its right of way was available for that purpose.
The county commissioners Saturday granted a franchise to the T. H. I. and E. Traction Company to extend its power lines to the mines of the Vandalia Coal Company in Cass township.
Eagle Island Club members will hold a fish fry at the club house on the Wabash near Riverton Thursday. They plan a big noon dinner and a full day of grounds cleanup and garden planting under Chas Bedwell and E A Billman. Members are asked to bring garden tools and saws. C H Stratton directs the work.
Burglars broke into the Stark pharmacy in Shelburn last night and carried away cigars tobacco flashlights and small jewelry valued at 35 dollars. They overlooked 1.50 in change left in the cash drawer. The burglary was discovered this morning when the store opened.
Mrs Ardilla Eaton a long time resident of this city died suddenly at five this morning at her South Court Street home Heart failure was the cause She was about 80 native of the city and the widow of the late James Eaton No children survive She belonged to the Christian church of this city.
The Appellate Court in Indianapolis upholds Sullivan County verdict in favor of Houston against Vandalia Coal Company for personal injury damages. The local court awarded $450.00 to the plaintiff.
Mr and Mrs Charles Hetzler left Monday for Basin Wyoming where he will take a district foreman post. He has served as district foreman for the Ohio Oil Company with headquarters here for three and a half years and will hold the same position in the new field.
Walter Harvey Dorris 24 book keeper and Clesta H Lance 20 music teacher both of Sullivan obtained a marriage license.
The State Board of Accounts reports the free gravel road department under County Road Superintendent Ed Dailey lacked contracts for material and equipment. It notes monthly employee reports with itemized data, gravel prices from local pits, and uniform freight costs, but no contract records for materials or eight aeroplane drags costing 185 dollars each.
