Faculty at Union Christian College discusses an alumni day during commencement week with a full all day program. Former students will attend a reunion with morning, afternoon, and evening addresses and a noon barbecue.
Mrs Malinda McBride a Sullivan county resident for nearly four score years celebrated her 98th birthday at home. Born in Kentucky she moved to Shaker Prairie with her parents at age 15 and was the last surviving child of William Mackintosh. About 75 relatives and friends gave her a surprise celebration.
The congregation of the First Presbyterian Church in Vincennes hosted a reception for Rev and Mrs August W Sonne from 7 30 to 9 30 pm. Guests in line included Rev and Mrs A W Sonne Mrs Addie Allen Mr and Mrs John D Hogue and Mr and Mrs Royal E Purcell. The event aimed to strengthen ties between the pastor his wife and church members while they stay with Dr Hubbard M Smith until the parsonage at Fifth and Main is ready.
Shelburn Indiana reports a taffy pulling party gone wrong as fifteen participants suffered after a prank taffy was doped. Medical aid was needed and Ed McKinley of the Red Cross helped. John Burn and others also felt effects. Mrs Ridgeway plans return from Phoenix around May first.
The Supreme Court ruled that a state may license liquor dealers, rejecting a challenge that licensing interfered with interstate commerce. The ruling contrasts with a Boone county judge Artman decision that saloon licensing violated state and national constitutional protections.
John William Kearns died Saturday noon at his home after weeks of illness. An early resident and Civil War veteran, he ran a cabinet shop here for years and was a longtime Methodist. Survived by wife three daughters and two sons, all grown. Funeral at his residence Monday led by Rev. J. H. Carnes with burial at Center Ridge.
Claude Raley of rural route seven Sullivan receives ten dollars monthly pension for injuries from the Spanish American war. He departed last week for Chicago to begin work as a traveling salesman.
Terre Haute March 14 County Engineer Grimes has completed the plans and specifications for the bridge across Prairie Creek on the Vigo and Sullivan counties line.
A horse sale at Scott's farm near Sullivan drew good attendance with strong prices on most stock. Percy Wolfe and D M Harris bought the Limelight colt a bay gelding foaled in 1901 and sibling to Ethlyn with a 2 10 mark, price 300 dollars. Edna Tell bay mare trotter foaled 1901 sold for 225 dollars to Dr E D Thixton. Nitrite bay mare trotter sired by Norval sold for 230 dollars to Dr H F Jones of Oaktown.
Graysville Turman township public school hosts a biannual display inviting all township patrons and county residents to view an expanded manual training exhibit. Principal George Bicknell says the event, to be held March 29 and 30 with possible April openings, aims to showcase the village school’s progress and attract state attention.
New Lebanon on March 20 reports a Saturday night production titled Dot the Miner's Daughter, or One Glass of Wine. The play drew a large crowd for the Methodist church benefit, with every cast member displaying professional stage presence and the result described as an unqualified success.

If Marshal Charles Shepherd is acquitted of manslaughter at the current circuit court session, locals plan a banquet in his honor for self defense claims. Aunt Sally Asbury, 81, celebrated a birthday at Kemp Asbury’s near Farmersburg. health good and likely many more anniversaries ahead.
Farmer Theo Lisman of Haddon township visited Carlisle to pay taxes and was found to have been taxed on $1100 for four years instead of $100. He will be refunded the excess, and Lisman urges county records scrutiny to uncover past errors or malfeasance. He calls for a countywide check of records to prevent future overcharges.
Francis Padgett known as Doc died after being caught between two coal cars at the Little Giant mine. The accident happened about 11 am with death two hours later. Coroner Brewer conducted the inquest at Little Giant. Mrs. Mary A. Pirtle of Haddon township died Saturday evening at her Carlisle area home after an extended illness, age about 65.
Martin W. Asrey leases the room on the north side of the square that was once John W. Wolfe & Son clothiers and plans to open a general store.
George W. Goodman of this city has purchased a half interest in the grocery business of J. H. Leonard. The firm will continue the business at the old stand.
William Morrison Baker a former county resident died Sunday at his Princeton home after moving there about 30 years ago. He was 61, a Sullivan Mason and survived by wife and daughter. Burial was in Center Ridge cemetery after services in Princeton. Roxa Wolfe wife of Winfield S. Wolfe died Sunday at 5 30 p m after an illness of consumption. She was 29, from Haddon township, married in 1901, and mother of Willard and Mildred Louise. Services were held Tuesday in Vincennes and burial in Center Ridge cemetery.
Lee F Bays has purchased the brick livery stable occupied by the Sullivan Transfer Company and begun extensive improvements. Four business rooms will flank the building, a plate glass front will be added, the roof raised, an elevator installed, and the second floor used as a store for vehicles. A concrete floor will be laid with many other renovations.
Jerusalem Chapter No 81 R A M conferred the Royal Arch degree on E F Walker Joseph P Duffy of this city and Ira S Anderson of Shelburn Thursday night. Tomorrow night there will be work in the Royal Arch degree and refreshments will be served.
Shelburn residents will lose two more saloons when the Pat Conner and Ote Sebring licenses expire April 2. Only one saloon remains, its license not expiring until July 4.
Sullivan lodge No. 911 B P O Elks will hold its annual election of officers on Monday evening.

The roll question at the Union mine north of Sullivan was settled Saturday. Miners claimed two years ago the company agreed to pay for cutting through rolls two inches thick. New owners disputed the claim. proof was furnished Saturday and miners will be paid for cutting through rolls going forward.
James Boone of the county displays oddities at Sullivan State Bank, including 31.5 inch horns from a two year old buck sheep, an eight inch hog rush, and a large cinder from a burned Timothy hay stack with numerous ashes and clinker. Boone offers no explanation for these phenomena.
Edgar Lowery and John Myers clashed in Myers restaurant on Monday night resulting in a bad facial injury to Myers. Charles Willie and Tom Sommers fought Saturday evening. Marshal Fox and deputy McCoskey interrupted. Each was fined five dollars before Squire Dickey.
Leonard Smith, a miner, entered a guilty plea to wife desertion before Squire Usrey on Monday. He was fined $10 with costs totaling $22.10. the fine was stayed.
Mr and Mrs William S Hough of rural route three Shelburn plan a move to Lawrenceburg Tennessee area to establish a new home. He sold a large amount of farm property and intends to buy land after some settlement time while Mrs Hough recently sold a Greene county farm and will invest proceeds in Tennessee land. They will drive to their new residence.
Mrs Catherine Sanders of Detroit travels to attend the death of her sister Mrs Winfield Wolfe. She will visit her parents Mr and Mrs Rufus Willarda few days before returning home.
County commissioners discuss removing the iron courthouse fence and surrounding yard, with a concrete walk planned around the area. The iron fence may move to the infirmary, and concrete walks will be laid in the yard. The Woman’s Relief Corps marks its 16th anniversary with exercises while a flag is presented to the G A R.
Joseph L. White, a former county resident, was found not guilty by a Vigo county circuit court jury after a lengthy deliberation on a Clay City bank robbery charge dated April 20, 1904. The case tied to accomplice Sam Reeves and prior offenses, with White planning to leave the region after acquittal.
Shelburn reports the infant child of Mr and Mrs B Suchocki Hungarians died on Friday. Burial took place Saturday at the Little Flock Cemetery.
