Spy plot leads to court martial and execution at Franklin
In June 1863 at Franklin Tennessee two self styled inspecting officers were captured after attempting to slip to Nashville. Col J P Baird convened a drumhead court martial finding them spies and ordering their execution by hanging at once. Colonel Williams cousin of Robert E Lee and Colonel Peter faced the gallows as the crowd watched in tears.
