Two shotfiers William McLaughlin and David McCullough were killed late Friday night in a double fatal incident. Police investigated the scene for motives and potential suspects.
In Cass township near Dugger Indiana, William McLaughlin 26 and Dave McCullough 30 were killed when a gas explosion struck Vandalia Mine No 17 at midnight Friday. Rescue efforts found them six hours later. the mine suffered heavy damage. McCullough left a wife and one daughter. McLaughlin left a wife and five children.
The county board of registration convened at the courthouse to register male and female voters. The board will sit sixty days until August 20 and registration is required to vote for delegates to the constitutional convention on September 18. Voters may register in person or by submitting proper blanks sworn before a notary public and mailed to the county registration board.
Sullivan County Medical Society held its monthly and annual gathering at Dr. C. R. Walters home in Paxton. Attendees included Drs. Carl F. Briggs James H. Neff W N Thompson J M Billman E M Corbin L A Stewart S E Lindley P A Barco Frank Boone James Miles Ira Gill and Dukes W A Bailey Charles Whipps and host Dr. Walters. War talks dominated as doctors discussed duties and a possible age limit increase from 45 to 55 for service.
The Shelburn Enterprise reports Tom Johnson closed a deal to reopen the Old Shelburn mine on No 7 vein. He was in Terre Haute Friday to negotiate a switch installation and cleanup will start early next week. Coal hoisting is expected within thirty days. Mine output is already nearly secured.
Miss Nettie Allen daughter of the late Professor A P Allen of Erie Kansas is visiting her uncle Col Robert F Knotts and other relatives in the area.
A well drilled by the Indiana and Illinois Oil Company on the J. J. Bragdon farm near Merom produced a natural flow of oil from the top after a shot bridged. Water was pumped for a week and more than 10 barrels of oil poured out during the night after pumping stopped. The company, with 1500 acres in the area, plans another well south of the current site. C. W. Welman leads the Merom Linton Illinois group.
Herbert Leach son of Mr and Mrs J S Leach of this city sailed last week from Calcutta India for home He expects to reach Sullivan about September 1 He has practiced dentistry there for several years with an American firm
Ross G Campbell son of J C Campbell wed Gladys McClanahan in a ceremony at the bride’s parents home two miles north of Farmersburg. Rev J F Shake officiated in the presence of immediate family. The bride, Indiana State Normal graduate, taught in Muncie last year. The groom is a progressive local farmer. They will reside four miles north of Sullivan in a ready furnished home.
Charles F. Batey a well known local businessman was elected president of the Sullivan County Loan & Trust Company last week. He succeeds ill health retiree Hix W. Davis and joins the board of directors. Batey begins duties Friday and leads the bank as active head. He is part of the Batey & Walters drug firm and formerly served as assistant secretary of the Citizens Trust Company.
Greenfield Ind dispatch reports John Charles Davis sues Hannibal Zike for 15000 dollars damages claiming alienation of his wife's affections. Zike formerly lived in this county just south of the city.
The appellate court upholds Judge Bridwell's decision in Hugh Houston v Vandalia Coal Co. for injuries from a mine incident. A jury had awarded damages to Houston.
Charles L. Davis and Benjamin Davis sue Peter F. Livingston and others in quiet title action. Isaac Underwood and Violet Underwood sue Lycurgus Bedwell and others. Mary E Ballew sues Leven Arnett. Melvin Bedwell sues Demmic N Bedwell. Lottie Williams sues Toby Williams for divorce. Rose Wade sues Bert Wade for divorce. George Rogers sues Kate Rogers to annul marriage. Henry A Butler sues Thomas Irvine et al. Partition action. Kennedy Machine Co. sues Cary Bogard to foreclose chattel mortgage.
Will Hays head of the State Council of Defense appoints S. Paul Poynter of this city to a special publicity committee aiding George Ade. The panel includes fifteen newspapermen from across the state.

Sullivan County raises unofficial Red Cross drive total to 17085.50 surpassing the 9500 quota. Campaign directed by Dr. Joe R. Crowder and C. L. Davis with aid from local leaders. countywide contributions led by Sullivan city and neighboring townships. Red Cross membership set at 2500 with drive aiming for 3000 and Indiana state contributions near 2.25 million.
The Merchants Association of Farmersburg met at Brown's shoe store to organize the Old Settlers gathering set for Thursday August 8. A speakers committee Chas A Lloyd W S Baldridge Fred B Lash and W V Jennings was named to secure speakers. Harry Baldridge coordinates stand privileges.
In a special election for the sixth congressional district to replace the late Daniel Comstock Republican Richard Elliott won over Democrat Finley Gray by about three thousand votes. Incomplete county returns show Elliott leading in Henry Rush Franklin Hancock Wayne counties with totals such as Henry 2 566 to 1 701 and Wayne 2 990 to 1 957.
Word arrives that J Lester Asbury, Spanish teacher at Tacoma High School, married Miss Vervian Wait, also a Tacoma teacher, on June 10. Asbury is son of Col and Mrs A P Asbury of Farmersburg.
Dave Giles county clerk Orville Hale sheriff and Dr Carl F Briggs named to serve as county exemption board under selective service law with official notification issued in Sullivan County for draft administration.
Sheriff Hale will transport Mrs Malis sa Blackburn who was declared insane to the southern insane hospital at Woodmere near Evansville today.
Morton C. Hulse, a former Indianapolis police sergeant, was found guilty of conspiracy in the 1914 city election. He previously served as a passenger conductor on the Indianapolis branch of the Illinois Central Railroad.
The city council last night elected Dr. S. E. Lindley to join the city school board replacing W. W. Harbaugh whose term is ending soon.
Edgar Davis aged 40 of this city died Saturday night at Union hospital Terre Haute after injuries from a slate fall at Peerless mine north of town. Funeral at M E church conducted by Sullivan Eagles lodge and Rev J T Scull. Burial Center Ridge cemetery. Survived by wife mother four brothers Ralph Ivinson and Laney of this city Homer of Hymera two sisters Mrs Charles Dean and Mrs Frank Hooper of Bicknell.
Judge W W Thornton of Marion Superior Court ruled that the 1817 legislature’s act for a constitutional convention is valid while the 1917 law granting women suffrage to vote for convention delegates and on the constitution submission is invalid. The suit by Henry W Bennett seeks to halt the September 18 delegate election. An appeal to the state Supreme Court is anticipated.
Miss Mae Taylor former Crowder hospital head nurse met in Indianapolis to sign a two year Red Cross service agreement. She plans a brief visit home in Palestine HI before joining a group of sixty five nurses sailing for France within thirty days.
Miss Jeanette Rankin congresswoman from Montana will deliver an address at the Merom chautauqua on Sunday afternoon September 2. Rankin is noted as the first woman elected to Congress, winning the November election last year on the Republican ticket.
The Presbyterian Methodist and Christian congregations will hold union services in July and August. The first service is Sunday evening July 1 at the Presbyterian church with Rev. J. T. Scull, pastor of the Methodist church, delivering the sermon.
The Supreme Court last week affirmed Judge Bridwell of Sullivan circuit court in six more Curry township local option election cases. The justices affirmed the Beach, Watson, Marlow, Reeves, Whittington, and Draper rulings, completing all 33 cases in the batch.

B. F. Lance, a rural carrier out of this city who was seriously injured in a runaway accident, has resumed his duties as carrier.
A man about fifty or sixty was found dead in the Wa bash river on the Indiana side near Riverton. Coroner Neff had the body buried at Center Ridge due to decomposition. A gold watch engraved Floyd C. Dickson and a pair of glasses were recovered, but identity remains unknown.
Bert Wade of Curry township pleaded guilty to petit larceny before Judge Brid Well. He was fined $5 and sentenced to an indeterminate term of one to seven years at the State Reformatory, suspended on good behavior on recommendation of Prosecutor Pigg and Jesse Burton for stealing silk.
The Davis vs Robbins damage suit is dismissed on plaintiff motion. William R. Mullins is granted a divorce from Mamie G. Mullins. John Funkhouser, receiver of Hymera’s Union Building and Loan, awarded 730.79 against Arthur Beckett, Cora E. Barnett, James Barnett, Clarence M. Reberger, and Thornton Reberger. Flora and Micajah Eaton win 50 against the Kelly estate. Marada L. Hunt gets 199.50 against the same estate. Susan Coulson and J Kerr Coulson sue Sullivan County Water Co. venue moved to Knox County for trial. Bonnie Gummere sues C. E. I. Railroad Co. venue moved to Vigo County for trial.

Mrs Marissa Blackburn was sent to jail on contempt of court and then found insane at an insanity inquest in Justice Watson s court by Drs J R Crowder W N Thompson and J H Neff.
Former Sullivan resident H O McKinley died June 1 in Portland Oregon after Brights disease. He lived in Sullivan for several years and worked in the cement contracting business.
Joseph Draper sat for an examination last Wednesday before the state board of dental examiners in Indianapolis to pursue licensure.
