Assailants linked to the Farmersburg town marshal Mahan were bound over to trial by the 10th Circuit Court. The proceedings set the stage for upcoming court action as prosecutors press for accountability in the local case.
Preliminary hearing in Sullivan jail for George Barnhart Henry Barnhart White Walters and James Johns on charges of assaulting Deputy Town Marshal Robert Mahan of Farmersburg. Bail set at 1000 each as prosecutors labeled a planned ambush with intent to kill. Witnesses included Sheriff Ed Keiley and other local officials with Mahan in fragile condition.
The Kennedy well No 5 on the Boyer farm has not yet come in and operations were halted Thursday afternoon. Drilling may start this week after the arrival of W H Fitzgibbons, Kennedy Co managing partner. Meanwhile crews work on No on W T Dix farm and D M Phillips drills on the Wash Osburn farm for Octo Oil Co. A well is expected today on the Hiram Drake farm.
Miss Conra Dudley is appointed as fifth grade teacher in the Central building replacing Miss Clara Self who receives a year long leave. Miss Mary Wright takes the other Central fifth grade in place of her sister Miss Nora Wright who also is granted a year’s leave for the same period.

Fire yesterday morning consumed the barn of John Waldorf on North State street causing an estimated loss of about 400 dollars.
Rev. William H Grim III is seriously ill at his city home and in very low condition though hopeful for recovery. The report notes his illness status and the family's request for prayers.
A county wide general rain from 6 30 last Wednesday evening through Thursday morning ended a long dry spell and brought hope to farmers. It was the first soaking rain since early April aside from a storm, and Sullivan County corn is now seen as likely to be a bumper crop after prior pessimism.
Superintendent William R. Curtis will resign in Sullivan and move with his family to Kewanee Illinois to oversee ninety teachers and nine buildings. The move follows a $3,000 annual salary at Kewanee, with Curtis praised for modernizing the Sullivan schools and expanding programs.
Carlisle July 29 Township Trustee J Frank Sproatt and the Haddon advisory board awarded the Paxton school building addition contract to C B Illis & Sons for 11500. Heating bid accepted from Hoosier Warming and Ventilating Co at 5125, plumbing excluded. Work expected to start within six weeks.
Hannibal Zike formerly farming near Sullivan buys half interest in Greenfield Indiana drug store M. C. Quigley, noted as a long standing business. He also runs a Morrill town Indiana grocery with his son in law.
The Presbyterian Church unit announced the picnic at Mrs. C. Newcome's home, originally set for Friday at 3 PM, will be held next Friday August 1 at the same hour.
Ishmael Park an ordinance sergeant in the U S coast artillery stationed in Portland Maine is on an eight day furlough visiting friends and relatives. A native of Shelburn he will be retired on pension in about six years after over 23 years in the army. He is the brother of Hoke Park of Park Wible at Sullivan and last visited Shelburn eleven years ago noting the town’s growth.
Dan Neal died days after Governor Ralston signed a pardon that would have freed him from a life sentence for the murder of George Hutchinson at Jackson Hill No. 2. Neal, who ran a hotel there, was convicted in Greene circuit court after a self defense plea. He died of tuberculosis at his wife’s home in Jasonville after health declined in prison.
At a county meeting in the superintendent’s office Assis tant State Leader Colman of Purdue University discussed county needs for farming. Opinions favored an agent skilled in soils and general farming with stock breeding expertise as a plus. Colman will select a suitable agricultural expert from his list and the agent will split time between Sullivan office work and field calls.
The city cement work contract, previously set for Ed Alumbaugh, has been awarded to William I Beck, the sole bidder this year. Sullivan Indiana officials also pass a resolution praising 17 years of service by John Fisk as water works engineer and express appreciation with copies to be filed.
Charles Hall of the Steel Tipple timber crew was seriously injured Wednesday when caught in a machine chain. He was struck by the front skid and dragged into the mechanism, needing seventy stitches for leg wounds. He was taken home with the possibility of amputation.
Thieves burglarized the R. L. Smith general store in Prairieton and the adjacent post office on Thursday night, stealing merchandise and cash including $20 and $7 in small change. George Smith, postmaster, suspects locals and alerted the Indianapolis post office inspector. A second break in at L. Ryman’s general store on the Sullivan road yielded merchandise and $5 in change. Sheriff Dennis Shea sent deputies to investigate, with no arrests. Officials believe the same gang also robbed the Asperger store in Riley on Wednesday.
County Superintendent Park reports Sullivan county public schools enrolled 8,462 students for 1912-13, up 156 from 8,306 in 1911-12, with an average daily attendance of 6,606. The gender split shows 4,278 boys and 4,189 girls. Enrollment by township and town varied, with Carlisle, Dugger, Farmersburg, Shelburn, and Sulllvan city contributing notable totals.
Mrs. Ella D. Woodard of Jefferson township sues Mrs. Mary Bedwell for slander seeking $5 000 damages. She accuses Bedwell of gossiping about an illicit relationship with Mr. Bedwell. Hunt and Gambill represent the plaintiff.
Sullivan Y M C A members plan a camp at Merom Chautauqua from August 21 to 31 with a public rest tent for parcel and umbrella check, a cook tent, and a table for members and friends. The arranging committee features John S. Taylor as chairman, with J F Douthitt and H E Tate.
Terre Haute Star reports Congressman W A Cuhop in Terre Haute declares that farm prices will remain high and cost of living will drop under the new Democratic tariff. He claims cattle at 10 dollars hogs 9.51 and horses and mules at record highs, with readers left uncertain about sources.
Hymera hosts an old soldiers and sailors reunion August 14 and 15 with speakers led by Mother Mary Jones the miners friend. Other speakers include William Green national statistician E C Sedwick Martinsville Ind past Grand Sachem Dr W R Halstead Terre Haute City Attorney Will Hays County Attorney Gilbert Gambill former Congressman John C Chaney Sullivan and Revs A P Asbury and B F Julian of Hymera.
Mrs. John Sevier of Sullivan was surprised at a party in Shelburn last night. A large Shelburn Sullivan crowd attended with ice cream cake and lemonade served, and music provided the entertainment. Guests included Mesdames Beardsley Beardsley Houston Hollingsworth Kirkham Roberts Houston Hollingsworth and Misses Houston Hollingsworth. Many pretty gifts were received.
Dugger July 25 Henry Ambs a loader at Superior mine No 10 was struck by a coal fall Friday in his room injuring his right arm flesh between elbow and wrist. The injury is painful but not serious.
Webster Barnard a prominent Sullivan County resident died suddenly of apoplexy at his home southwest of the city. He was born in Buckport Missouri on April 30 1854 and came to town in 1872 with his brother Henry J Barnard who helped organize the First National Bank. He left a wife Rachel Knotts two children Julia and Rachel and a son Henry Barnard plus three sisters. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church with Sullivan Masonic lodge conducting services at Center Ridge Cemetery.
At a Tri Kappa meeting with Miss Verne Chaney the engagement of Lara Gambill and Shelburn's Jess Bolinger was announced. The couple plans a September 17 wedding. A three course luncheon followed the sorority meeting.
Wheat yield surpassed previous years in quantity and quality with averages from 20 to 35 bushels per acre and some areas reaching 50 bushels. Mill deliveries show 59 to 62 pounds per bushel and grain is free from smut. Oats and hay crops failed entirely.
A south bound interurban car collided with a car driven by Walter Wyman on North Court Street Monday night. The impact damaged the automobile and caused Wyman's engine to stall. he jumped from the vehicle to avoid collision.
Mrs J M Barnett and Mrs James Nicholson departed for a two months visit and outing to Oklahoma Nevada California and Washington to visit points of interest across the western states.
The Model Ice Cream Company sold out last week to the Sullivan Ice Cream Company and will continue the business at its plant near the C. and B. I. station.
Hymera miner Harry Ballard aged 23 married Judith M Patton of Hymera by Squire Kirkham at the clerk's office on Thursday noon.
Scott Kiser of Farmersburg faces a profanity charge. The case is continued until tomorrow in Squire Calvert's court.
