Boy Drowns at Klondike Pond Near Sullivan
Harold Hammond 14, son of Mr and Mrs Omer Hammond, drowned Friday in the Klondike mine pond one mile northwest of Sullivan. His father nearby could not save him after finding the deep water hole. Rescue attempts by family and neighbors failed. body recovered after 45 minutes underwater and funeral held at the Methodist church with large attendance.

Grades from the May 24 Civil Service Examination at the high school were released by the Civil Service Commission in Cincinnati. The overall scores surpassed the usual average with Mason posting 89.90 to lead, followed by W. C. Borders 88.70 and Reville Haddon 88.65, then Homer Tate at 87.05.

Thieves Target Hymera With Two Daring Break-ins
Robbers used putty removal to enter Cummins hardware and the Southeastern railroad station in Hymera on Saturday night. They took revolvers, ammunition, flashlights and knives from the hardware store and rifled the baggage room but left no money or invoices. Sheriff Kelley and Town Marshal Steward led the probe, with Roy Peyton suspected of involvement though a larger gang is feared.

Ray Carter 32 of East Jackson street was arrested Thursday night after drunkenly disturbing the peace and resisting Chief of Police Henry Smith with a loaded shotgun He was arraigned before Mayor Hoover Friday morning and fined ten dollars plus costs which will jail him for 25 days

Safety Lamps for Superior Urged at Miners Meeting
Dugger July 22. Miners of the Superior mine and Vandalia Coal Co officers discussed installing safety lamps for all workers. Superintendent John Boyle offered to supply lamps, provide two attendants, and charge five cents per day rent. Miners opposed the rent and warned they might remove motors and track if forced to use lights.

A 13-year-old girl Grace Deckard was attacked by two young men near Shirley Hill in Sullivan county. She described being grabbed and held with a hand over her mouth before the assault, and villagers mobilized to search for the suspects, who fled and may face mob action if captured.

Armed Posse Guards Shelburn Bank In Fear Of Robbery
Shelburn July 22 A posse of six men with rifles and automatic revolvers stood guard at Shelburn National Bank after a tip about a possible raid. Town Marshal Sauders and Deputy Sheriff Orville Hale led the precautionary detail. Officials gave no statements but reports say a gang led by Henry Davey, an escaped Carmi jail fugitive, may be involved.

Auto accident injures Hymera woman near Brazil
Mrs Samuel Strahle of Hymera suffered a broken collar bone and others escaped serious injury when their auto skidded into a ditch and flipped over near Brazil on a Sunday pleasure trip. The four occupants were bruised but grateful for the accident’s relatively light outcome. Mrs Strahle expected to be laid up about two weeks.
