Good Management of Ewes Is of Greatest Importance

The article urges rigorous pre lambing care for ewes to reduce losses from cold exposure and inadequate milk. It advises shelter on high, well drained ground with ample space, clean dry bedding, and night confinement. It promotes separate housing for lambing ewes, dog proof fencing, a trough for lambs, and early feeding of protein rich rations including clover, soy hay, corn silage, turnips, and a mixed grain diet to boost milk and growth.

Dairy plans of Danish farmer

The Danish farmer aims to keep the largest efficient herd on limited land using careful manure management and small, frequent applications. Cows are tethered or led to pasture, with minimal grain. winter feeding is heavy on hay, roots, straw and a mix of oil cake and bran. Milk flow is steady year round with most cows freshening Sept to May.

Grading Up a Herd for Richer Milk

If the herd’s milk fat is low, select a sire from a line with a strong butter fat record. Careful breeding is the only effective method to raise average richness. Progress is gradual but started promptly yields encouraging results after two years. Each year adds value to herd and owner satisfaction.

Proper Enrichment of Soil

Our farmers are urged to increase scientific soil enrichment, noting that removing nutrients without returning them harms productivity and soil health, and calling for broader adoption of soil management practices.
