County's Oldest Citizen Dead in Sullivan County
Manning Drake 95, Sullivan County's oldest resident, died Sunday night at his Fairbanks township home after years of poor health. Born June 17, 1813 in Ohio, he moved here at age four and lived in Fairbanks township as a farmer. He left seven children: Ellen Scott, Malinda Gaskins, Manning Drake, James Drake, Ira Drake, and William Drake. Funeral was held Tuesday at his residence with burial in Drake Cemetery.

Death of Francis Howard Farm er of Jefferson Township
Francis Howard a prominent farmer of Jefferson township died last Wednesday afternoon of consumption. He resided six miles east of Carlisle and is survived by a wife and three daughters. He was an uncle to J. F. and Ed Douthitt of this city. Burial occurred Friday at Indian Prairie.

Sunday exercises at Merom Station celebrated the completion of a handsome new Methodist church. George McNabb organized arrangements. Asbury delivered the sermon. James Watson spoke in the afternoon. Several thousand attended. about 1500 was raised to cover church debt before dedication.

Fires Rise to Frequent Hazards in Sullivan
A series of small blazes touched Sullivan this weekend. A Davis Hotel kitchen area near the ice box caught fire when a lit candle used to place ice toppled into sacks, causing minor damage. Later, a barn on West Jackson Street owned by Otto Krug, W. H. Burks, and T. B. Shaffer burned, likely from fireworks. Three sets of harness vanished, Shaffer insured. While firefighters were on that blaze, a small fire in the McCammon hotel check room caused only slight damage.

Death of Edith McClanahan at 21 in Farmersburg
Edith McClanahan 21 daughter of Hardy McClanahan died at her aunt Mrs Rice McClain’s home Friday after a lifelong spinal illness. Funeral held Saturday at 3 pm led by Rev George Fuson. Burial in West Lawn cemetery. Her mother died recently near Burchard.

Matron Lora Whalen’s suicide attempt at Davenport home
Carlisle July 7 news reports the attempted death by own action of Miss Lora Whalen matron of the State Orphans home at Davenport Iowa. The 32 year old woman reportedly kept a boy inmate imprisoned for three months and swallowed poison then chloroform after the boy was found. Doctors saved her life and authorities fear she may become a maniac. she has long served at the home with a previously good record.
