War contremue for Sullivan County pay and night meetings to be held here on Saturday February 9. Local officials announce community gatherings to discuss wartime efforts and civic support activities.
The National Council of Defense orders County War Conferences nationwide with Sullivan County holding a Saturday event at the Christian Church starting nine in the morning. Notable speakers include Everett Colby of New Jersey and W. Jewett, mayor of Indianapolis, among others. The conference aims at patriotic education and war effort guidance with many organizational representatives invited to attend.
Walter J. Lang age 34 an assistant manager for Standard Oil Evansville and Miss Freda Wretherick of Evansville were married Saturday afternoon by Rev. John McD. Horne pastor of the Christian church in Evansville.
Mise Jeasie Wiley of Atwood age 11l in a brief reference to Mrs M A Haddon. The fragment notes a possibly local social or community acknowledgment.
John Claggett a former Sullivan business figure aged 47 died January 19 at his Orange Park Florida home after three years of poor health. The body was sent for burial with funeral held at T. E. Wyne residence conducted by Rev. J T Scull. Burial was at Camp Ground cemetery near New Lebanon. He was born in Missouri and moved to Sullivan about 18 years ago. He managed the shoe department for Springer and Carruthers before the firm retired. Survived by his widow a daughter Mrs Albert Torr of Orange Park and a son Wilbur in the U S Army in France.
Clyde Crawford of Sullivan owns a J Humbert watch made in France over 150 years ago once owned by General Lafayette. He traded for it in 1917 from Clarence St. John of Berrien Springs. An affidavit, signed by August G Ganser, traces the watch from the Duke of Daullaine to Lafayette in 1770 and through a long chain of holders to Ganser in 1900.
Mrs. Charles Pirtle shares her son Paul Pirtle's letter from Camp Zachary Taylor. He explains being released from a crowded hospital after tonsillitis and measles, with a 28 day stay cut to 10 days, and notes fellow patients with mumps eye neuralgia and head issues.
Homer Bates 23 a miner and Arthur Rounards 35 fought after drinking Saturday at Bates home. Bates fired a double barrel shotgun wounding Rounards leg below the knee, which was amputated. Rounards wounded man is in Freeman hospital Linton. Bates jailed on assault with intent charge claiming self defense.
Sullivan County exceeded its Red Cross War Drive quota by tallying 7,156 total members against a 5,700 goal. New members across branches include New Lebanon 258 Gill 210 Graysville 578 Fairbanks 263 Warmersburg 316 Shelburn 348 Hymera 1 056 Dugger 206 Sullivan 630, totaling 8,865 new members and 3,291 old members.
John Dell Claud, tied to a January 3 jitney robbery of Terre Haute driver Jesse Jackson, admits murdering another sailor in Chicago. He implicates Raymond Dunn, who denies the charge. The pair were arrested at St. Louis and Jackson's stolen taxi recovered in Lebanon, Illinois after sale for 45 dollars.
Banks in Sullivan will close each Monday at noon beginning next Monday and continuing until further notice. A city banks letter to county fuel administrator George G. Billman explains the move as a patriotic duty to aid fuel conservation despite Garfield order not requiring Monday closures.
Announcement of Katherine Margaret Roach daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Roach Indianapolis after brief diphtheria illness burial in Cincinnati. Mrs Roach formerly Miss Marie Woods of this city and the deceased often visited here with her mother.
Charles Stevens of Fairbanks township writes that his son Wayne C Stevens who lives near Falson North Dakota notes the Union is a welcome guest at his home on the wind swept prairies of the state.
Arthur M. Ward of Colorado Springs reports little wind or snow in Merom Indiana during winter. He notes about one inch of snow on the ground and mentions plans to develop a winter resort there.

At a Sullivan County Executive Committee meeting, the Thrift Stamp and War-Savings effort announced chairmen for each department including W. P. Stratton as Thrift Stamp Club Director and Arthur D. Cutler Publicity Chief. James R. Brown leads the Speakers Bureau and Rev. J. T. Scull heads Churches and Bible Schools. Township groups list chairmen and five associates for Jackson, Hymera, Curry, Farmersburg, Shelburn, Fairbanks, Merom, New Lebanon, Carlisle, Paxton, Pleasantville, and Sullivan with city and county supervisors coordinating.
