Charles F. Jean died at his Paducah home last week. Born in Sullivan, he was the son of John Jean of Robinson Illinois who ran a poultry business and died there years ago. Charles engaged in poultry in Evansville for many years and once ran for mayor there but was defeated.
Ed Sloan a 26 year old miner from Shelburn was killed at the Reliance mine when slate collapsed trapping him under seven tons of rock. He worked alone and was found instantly deceased Saturday afternoon.
The petit jury was excused Thursday morning by Judge Bridwell for the term. The current term ends Saturday and the February term will open on February 17.
Pearley Sparks, a coal miner, filed a damage case in the circuit court against James W. Heck, a Farmersburg saloonist, and the Bankers Surety Company. Sparks seeks 3500 dollars claiming he was intoxicated at Keck's saloon on January 24 when liquor poured on his feet and set ablaze, causing permanent injuries and inability to work.

George Gribber the cowboy arrested in Sullivan on a saddle theft from Scott Bippus of Vincennes pleaded guilty in Vincennes circuit court. Judge Willoughby imposed 30 days in jail a $1 fine and one year disfranchisement. Including 70 days already served the total reaches 100 days in Knox county jail.
Henry Cushman a 28 year old Dugger miner pleaded guilty in Clay circuit court at Brazil to manslaughter in the fatal shooting of James Pipes. He received a 2 to 21 year sentence in the state prison after a conference with Prosecutor Bays. Cushman claimed ill health and said the killing grew from a dispute over Pipes and his wife.
Fairbanks high school defeated the Graysville Independents 29 to 15 at Pound's hall. Drake and D Thomas anchored the defense while Kersey, Fuller, L Thomas and F H S delivered key scoring. Fairbanks has seven wins against two losses and seeks more county high school games via manager Percy M. Lester.
William Ferree twenty four of this city pleaded guilty to obtaining money on a false note forged in his father's name. Judge Bridwell sentenced him to the reformatory at Jeffersonville for one to seven years for a $26 note.
Earl Hicks, 38, a farmer near Sullivan, was arrested by the police and a C and E I detective on a grand larceny charge. He allegedly took a suitcase from Clarence Russell of Owensboro on a C and E I train, later found at Hicks home with clothes worth about 75 dollars. Hicks waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to circuit court on a $500 bond. Hicks is married with five children.
Dr. Thomas Holmes, second president of Union Christian College at Merom, died at Lakemont New York age 95. Born November 1817 in New York, he resigned as college president in 1873 after a board dispute. He suffered a streetcar injury years ago and a recent stroke led to his death. His wife Ettice Smith Holmes died last April in Chelsea Michigan.
A. O. True’s cat reportedly endured a voluntary fifteen day fast with no food water light or air. The animal hid in an old bureau drawer on the back porch and was found alive after the period, able to eat and expected to recover fully per Mitchell Tribune.
Sheriff Kelley and Deputy Orville Hale transported John Meekin of Shelburn, jailed 2 to 14 years for assault with intent. Floyd McCammon of Taylorville, 1 to 8 years for petit larceny. William Ferree of this city, 1 to seven years for forgery.
Lola M Gadberry of this city was granted a divorce Monday at Bloomfield from Green M Gadberry. Her maiden name Lola Robertson was restored in the decree.
A skunkology course at Carlisle schools prompted shutdowns and fumigation after unknown parties put skunk carcasses in furnace ducts. Odor appeared first day, crisis on the second day led to dismissal of the high school and full fumigation. No suspects have been caught.
Robert Smith of Shelburn, wanted in connection with recent robberies, was arrested in a Terre Haute saloon Monday night by Deputy Marshal Weaver. He slipped the Shelburn officer after capture, and fled again from the saloon where he had been held.
All voters must be enumerated every six years under a 1867 act. In 1913 trustees begin counting across townships, finishing by July 1. Reports go to the county auditor and state auditor, with a state map showing county shapes and voter counts. Responding is not tied to taxes or local options.
White County circuit court in Carmi arraigned Henry Davey of Shelburn and Charles C. Riggs of this city on robbery charges. Grand jury returned indictments, with Riggs jailed in Robinson and Davey held in Carmi to prevent communication.

Carlisle January 28. In today’s local option election Haddon Township chose to remain in the dry column by a 232 vote margin. The wets had opposed the measure, while dry supporters claimed a tougher fight this year. the township has been without saloons for four years.
Three suits filed in circuit court by Gilbert C Hopewell and Jasper D Prose against Monon Coal Company seek $600 each for props and timbers used in erecting a mine tipple. Hunt & Gambill represent the plaintiffs. Other notes include a liquor license grant in Jackson township and several dismissed actions with costs. A state case involving Tressie Mable Fore against Wm DeLoss Latshaw resulted in a death finding and a $150 payment order.
A group of tramps and umbrella menders near the Illinois Central water tank fought Sunday evening. William Delaney, about 55, suffered a deep chin wound and other injuries. John Levering was jailed after a clash with Chief Smith. In city court, Divine and Martin were fined $50 with fines suspended on leaving the city, McManey and Delaney $5, and Levering $20.
Jake Colvin confessed to Chief of Police Smith that he stole a revolver from Jacob Marvel of Sullivan. He pawned the gun for two dollars and was jailed awaiting petit larceny charges. A suspended sentence is anticipated.

Mrs Mary A Holland widow of Tom Holland died Friday at her home near the C and BE I station after an extended illness The funeral was held at the home Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev W S Jewell She was daughter of the late Benjamin Stice and sister of B F Stice station master at Terre Haute Union depot and Charles Stice killed in the Vandalia wreck at Terre Haute

Samuel W. Woodsmall a Shel burn attorney was convic ted by a circuit court jury on conspiracy to commit a felony. He faces 2 to 14 years in prison with bond set at about 3500 for an appeal. Bondsmen surrendered him and he awaits motions and possible new trial as sensational evidence from Charles C. Riggs emerges.
