Large concerns look for sites near Sullivan with cheap fuel and strong rail access. A potential factory employing 800 workers on 50 acres could transform the town, but local leaders must actively promote the offer and unite capital and labor to attract investment and develop resources.
J. B. Sowden of Marion Indiana spent several days here evaluating Sullivan for a proposed fruit jar plant. He seeks cheap fuel and good shipping nearby and would provide employment. Local residents should support securing the factory, which he appeared to favor.
The marriage of C. H. Stratton of this city and Miss Winifred Fehon of Orange New Jersey occurred last Saturday at St. Augustine Florida with Rev Dr Martin officiating. The groom's parents were in attendance. The couple left for Daytona Florida then New Smyrna to spend the winter and return to Sullivan in April.
Julius Hatry, longtime clothing and footwear salesman, plans to open a modern shoe store about July 1 in the building now occupied by O. M. Patton on the north side of the square. Hatry, who arrived in 1886, has built a strong countywide reputation as a businessman and will stock a complete line of boots and shoes with every modern convenience.
A month old child of Neal Pirte of Dugger was found dead in bed Sunday morning. The infant was never strong, and the cause of death is not specified in available reports.
Town officials debated Indiana Coal Belt Traction Co. franchise terms at a meeting. Voters demand a copy of the ordinance before any action and wary questions arise over granting perpetual street rights to a bid-driven company. A large gathering featured a civic program with named speakers and a communal feast marking the occasion.
A 16 year old boy Cox drowned after breaking through ice while skating on Black Creek five miles northwest of Grayville. A companion aided by grabbing the ice survived a near drowning after breaking through. Cox's body was found under the ice Sunday afternoon near the scene. he is the son of a Hutsonville cattle buyer.
C E Newlin of Indianapolis spoke at the county Prohibition convention and lectured on Our Civic and Industrial Life at the Christian church. The talk shifted into a Prohibition political speech arguing party collusion with the saloon, while noting Indiana law allows local option by voters. The meeting ended with the collection.
Large town notices advertised a boxing event with Kid Byrne, Tedy Britton, and preliminaries by George Price and Kid Page, plus a stunt by Joe Adkinson. Deputies say the county cannot permit prize fights and will enforce the law, effectively closing the incident.
Edward Fisher formerly with J. P. Stratton and Sonthi harness dealers married Tuesday at Linton to Eva Dillman of Yale Illinois. Father Baron officiated. The couple will reside in town.
Mrs. Thomas Daugherty, longtime county resident and Virginia native, died Monday at her New Lebanon home at age 80. Widow of Thomas Daugherty, she leaves two children, Thomas of New Lebanon and Mrs. William Burnett. Funeral today at the M E church in New Lebanon, Rev. Willis presiding, with burial at Burnett Cemetery.
Clyde McAllister of Farmersburg writes from Herschel Island in the Arctic Ocean about three years at sea aboard a whaling vessel. He notes twelve whales last summer, plans to hunt for forty, and describes ice water collection, local natives, a missionary family, and a schoolteacher on the island. He mentions a delayed letter due to 1000 miles by dog sled to a railroad and asks for replies to reach him next spring.
Mr and Mrs Clay Ladd hosted guests Monday evening with music by Mrs Ladd and Mrs Marion Shade. Five tables played progressive Carroms and prizes were awarded. Minnie Mattix won the first prize, a box of bon bons, while Mr and Mrs James Greenlee took the consolation prize.
