A prominent firm reports a record high sale of delinquent properties last week, marking the largest volume in many years. Officials note extensive foreclosures and rising auction activity affecting local markets.
A comprehensive sale of delinquent real estate at the county courthouse yields a large total and many purchases. The list records owner names and buyers by townships and shows widespread activity across Farmersburg and neighboring areas with numerous transfers to Springer and Haddon, J. R. Brown, and others.
Mrs. Mary Rose Brewer widow of Samuel S. Brewer and former New Lebanon teacher died at her home 60 East Third Street Peru after five weeks with heart disease. Funeral at Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Harry Nyce. burial in Crown Hill Indianapolis. She was born Mary Thomson in 1871 in Mankato Minnesota and had been a longtime community benefactor.
Miss Glenn Hoke becomes the wife of Ira D. Schaffer in a noon ceremony at the George Noke home near Carlisle. The couple plans a three week honeymoon from Evansville to Florida and Cuba before settling in Vincennes. The bride is daughter of George and Mrs. Hoke. the groom is assistant cashier at the German National Bank of Vincennes.
Rev Oliver Martin Deal pastor of Graysville Methodist church and Opal Malvina Rice of Prairie Creek township Vigo county received a marriage license in Terre Haute on Monday. The minister is 31 and the bride 25.
Word arrives that Herbert Benefield 25 formerly of Graysville was killed February 2 in a railroad collision at Douglas Kansas. He worked as a fireman on a train and leaves a wife and two children. His parents Mr and Mrs Wm Benefield now reside in Amarilla Texas.
Miss Louise Riggs of Indiana University Bloomington spent Sunday with her parents Mr and Mrs James R Riggs.
Joe R. Loudermilk bought 80 acres in Hamilton township two miles south of town from heirs of Leah Loudermill. The land, part of an 1851 Mexican War grant to James L. Loudermilk, has stayed in the family for 66 years, and James now lives in Hazen Arkansas. The grant was signed by Millard Fillmore. James is among the county’s last surviving Mexican War veterans. The deal closed last week and heirs plan to move to Tagen, Arkansas with Weeley, Winfield, and Ed Neal.
Indianapolis February 20 Philip Zoercher former Supreme Court reporter argues against blind Democratic opposition to Goodrich. He says the party should pursue big reforms and support Goodrich to help the state and share in any administrative success rather than merely seek offices. He urges appealing to progressives and focusing on future policies.
The Vigo circuit court ended 12 years of litigation by approving bond sales for Prairie Creek drainage. Sullivan County Loan & Trust Co. bought 2275 dollars in county bonds and Vigo county issued 35000 dollars for Miller and Company of Indianapolis. J B Dorris won the excavation contract to start soon, affecting about 3000 acres in Fairbanks and Prairie Creek townships. Marshall G Lee of Terre Haute chairs the association with I J Sterwalt secretary and William Riggs treasurer. Directors include E B Sterwalt W J Gobin John Pigtitas Jesse Clark and William Riggs. Original proceedings were filed by Higgins and Cavins.
An examination will be held in this city on Saturday March 24 to fill the rural carrier position at Pleasantville and any future vacancies on county routes. Application blanks obtainable from the postmaster at Pleasantville or Sullivan.
Lee F Bays H F Davis B T Lang and E D Davis attended the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity state banquet in Indianapolis at the Hotel Severin Saturday evening. Dick Miller of Indianapolis served as toastmaster and mayoral candidate. Distinguished speakers included Charles W Fairbanks Meredith Nicholson and A H Smith bursar of Indiana University.
J W Watson holds a public sale at his Graysville area farm next Monday at 1 pm featuring 11 cows 7 heifers and a full blood Polled Durham bull. W A Wiley Co conducts a mule sale at Brown livery barn next Tuesday with 75 to 100 mules aged 3 to 8 years. Harry E Allan offers cattle horses hogs and farming implements at Uncle Henry Shields farm near Little Flock church next Wednesday at 10 am. Each sale advertised on page seven.

In the Presbyterian church next Sunday evening G P Rockwell of the Olivet Institute Chicago presents a lecture on the nations peril illustrated by many stereopticon photographs of urban poverty poor housing immoral practices and efforts to reform. He argues cities will dominate politics as populations rise and urges patriotism education and religion to improve urban life.
Brazil defeats Sullivan 29 to 24 in a tightly played basketball game at Brazil High School. Smith and Andrews led Brazil while Bond stood out for Sullivan. Barn players contributed with field goals and free throws as listed in the game summary.
John Joseph McKinney a New York broker wed Ida Jane Cadmus of New York Saturday afternoon at the bride’s brother Harry C Booth’s West Washington street home. Rev W E Gray officiated. A wedding supper followed at Hotel Deming in Terre Haute before the couple departed for New York. Mrs Adams mother of the bride will visit Harold Booth and Mrs Booth.
Merchant M. W. Usrey purchases the south side building at the public square from Benjamin Davis. The former Greek Candy Kitchen location will be repaired and improved, with Usrey moving stock from the north side to the new site.
For the first time in many years teams with heavy loads crossed the Wabash on ice at Merom Hutsonville and Riverton last week. Henderson Hedden, moving his family to Illinois, crossed with teams on the ice after refusing ferriage.
Julian Pirtle of Carlisle has been elected editor in chief of the Wabash official magazine at Crawfordsville. The publication is produced monthly by the college's senior class.
Frank J. Nicholas of this city has purchased a 45 foot lot on South Court street from Mrs. Flora Caving of Indianapolis and will construct a residence there this summer.
