Early Mills On Buttermilk Creek And Caledonia Trail
The first mill by Peter Alumbaugh on Buttermilk Creek used a horse mill, a pioneer device. A later water mill on Busseron near Caledonia drew settlers from far, and Caledonia became a regional trading hub with flat-boats sent to New Orleans. The Buttermilk Creek name arose after soldiers drank too much buttermilk at a house along the stream.
