The high court ruled clerks and sheriffs are owed two dollars per diem for court attendance beyond salary. Murderous attack by a Davis House cook
Rube Wilson, a cook at the Davis house, attacked Willie Coffman in the kitchen during noon hour. Coffman, a hotel waiter, was struck with a meat cleaver causing a deep facial gash. Wilson, described as burly and offensive, was jailed after a preliminary hearing and bound over to circuit court on assault with intent to murder.

Levee Contract Awarded For 12 Mile Project
Sealed bids for the Island Levee Association 12 mile levee in Fairbanks and Turman townships were opened by attorneys John T. and Will H. Hays. Cauliflower and Cox of Hutsonville Ill won with 62041.40 dollars. The second bid was 85000 dollars from Ben Crowder and Co. Sullivan. The contract requires completion by May 1 1905. Bond issue of 75000 dollars will be sold at once.

Additional Rural Routes Begin January Fifteen
Interest grows in starting four new rural routes to commence January 15. Route 4 will be served by Arthur K. Willis along the old Graysville road to Wm Shields and past Dodd school, back via Allen Osborn and Amos Goodwin. Route 5, Levi N. Willis, travels south gravel road to George Ex line and past Parks school, down to James E. Driver’s, back to Anthony Robbins, and to the post office. Route 6 is Chas E. Tate, heading past Bogle mine to Gardner school, then west and north to Benson school, east past Thos Osborn and John Goodwin, back to the post office. Route 3, on which Charles E. Lucas declined the position, awaits appointment before the 15th after which the east poor farm road to Pope school will be covered and connected to the Exline line and near Dugger on gravel road up to Antioch coal mine then north to the Cale donia road and back to town.

The Graysville new school building barely escaped a Friday morning fire caused by a burning coal fragment. Donald Maple, returning from Merom where he attended the dedication, noticed the blaze and extinguished it, preventing major damage to the recently completed structure.

Fire sets small area alight at Citizens Mine near Sullivan
A fire started Saturday afternoon in a room of the Citizens Coal Company mine east of Sullivan. Miners misjudged the blaze as minor, but by Sunday the fire spread. Mine boss Richard Jones and Noble Burton nearly suffocated by smoke before rescue. Fire engine and pond water eventually controlled the blaze by Monday noon. The fire damaged only a few braces in one room. operations resumed promptly. The incident did not halt coal deliveries and owner W H Sexton continues expanding his coal business.
