Soldiers at Sullivan report brisk activity as inspection day approaches with strict grooming and equipment standards. Percy M. Lester of Fairbanks writes from Great Lakes Naval Training Station near Chicago. He details camp life from Camp Paul Jones to Camp Dewey, drills, barracks, hammocks, mess halls, and Y M C A facilities. He notes morning chores, schooling, guard duty, and camaraderie with fellow sailors while praising Navy life.
O. L. Springer has stepped down from the county food director post. The County Council of Defense will appoint his successor. Springer will depart soon for Colorado and other western locations for several weeks.
Wilmer Strawn, a local miner, broke his right arm Monday morning while starting his car to go to the mine. He received treatment at the scene and was not hospitalized.
John W. Lindley 0. 8B. Harris and Richard Bailey left Monday for Cincinnati where the suit Ray dure v Lindley et al will be heard by the U S Circuit Court of Appeals. The case appeals from Kentucky district court. Sullivan residents are interested in the suit which will decide title to valuable oil holdings in Kentucky.
A circuit court jury convicted Mrs. Margaret Bowen of Cass of assaulting Mrs. Izora Wheeler. Bowen fined $100 with costs about $209. Both women, each weighing around 250 pounds, were severely beaten in the street fight.
A large producer was drilled Friday by Charley Scott and C. W. Welman on the Will G. Riggs farm seven miles northwest of the city. Ten feet of sand was pierced at 836 to 46 feet. The well was shot Saturday afternoon and produced one hundred barrels or more.
Lieutenant Perigord of the French Army under the County Council of Defense postponed for a second time. His scheduled address at the lyric theatre was cancelled due to the illness of his father in Minneapolis.

Rh W Akin of this City named chairman of the District War Savings Advisory Committee. In Indiana the second district, including Daviess to Sullivan counties, is allocated 4 514 520 dollars in War Savings stamps.
A circuit court jury found John Myers of Selburn not guilty of illegal sale of liquor to Charles Hall after an all night deliberation. Otha Springer was acquitted by Judge Bridwell on the illegal sale of cigarettes.

Martha Osburn died at her Shelburn home at age 85. A county pioneer and widow of Thomas Osburn, she was a lifelong Methodist and the funeral was led by Rev. McCullough at Little Flock. Burial followed at Little Flock. Survived by children Elza Osborn Bryce Ridgewey Cale Tistapson Bret Bolinger Eve Neshst and sister Mrs Nancy Cuppy.
County Clerk Giles received a federal appointment as the explosive licenser for Sullivan county. All firms and individuals handling explosives must obtain a license in person at the clerk’s office. Miners, mine bosses, hardware stores, druggists and others using explosives are affected. License fee is twenty five cents.

Charles G. French age 35 farmer wed Gertrude F. Alsop age 22 of near Sullivan. Carl G. Harper age 44 tailor wed Eulah McGinnis age 18 of Carlisle.

Danby Mayfield of the city underwent an operation at Robinson Hospital and yesterday suffered a relapse and is reported to be in a dangerous condition.

A large number of subscribers are in arrears on subscription and the paper will be discontinued for delinquents. Despite paper and material costs rising, the Union has not increased its subscription price and asks readers to advance payments to avoid rate changes.
The Retail Grocers Association investigated a one hundred pound sugar shipment to a non retail grocery firm in the city. The company said an employee made the delivery without management authorization and may seek return of the sugar.
Lewis S. Outcalt 73, Civil War veteran and San Diego resident, died after falling from a street railway bridge while crossing with his stepson and daughter in law en route to a G A R pageant. Mrs. Outcalt previously known as Mrs. Ella S. Jenkins of Carlisle, returns to use her married surname in social records.
Uncle Henry Wallace native of Haddon township dies at 77 years in Carlisle after paralysis since March. Born April 30 1840 he wed Sarah M Cox in 1863 and had eleven children nine survive. Funeral Thursday at 1 PM from Christian church with Rev W R Cady, interment Trimble cemetery.
Doctor Enoch J Yager, a prominent physician, collapsed and died unexpectedly Sunday evening while reading. The sudden death occurred at his home, leaving the medical community and family in shock. He had practiced in the region for decades and was known for his clinical work and community service.
Dr Enoch James Yager a longtime Graysville physician and postmaster was found dead in his chair Sunday night. He had lived in Graysville since 1915 with prior practice in Indianaola Otterbein Mottterbein Green Hill and returned to Graysville in 1915. He was 69 born September 18 1845 Celina Ohio and was active in Sullivan County and Indiana Medical Societies. He is survived by his wife and eight children and was a Prohibitionist.
Miss Glenn Yeager, cooperative weather observer for the county, reports the week ending December 9 brought cloudy days, chilly nights, and light snowfall. Daily highs ranged from 53 to 26 degrees with lows from 41 down to 7 below. A trace of snow fell on the 6th along with 4 inches on the 8th and half an inch on the 9th.
Sullivan boys enlist Pat Land of Carlisle who worked at Watson restaurant and joined the regular army last week sworn in Sunday. Sinclair a Maxwell Sowles Shoe Company salesman left Friday for Great Lakes Training Camp to report for duty in the U S Navy.
