Lightning kills ex county official in Sullivan County barn
Ex County Commissioner John Wood, aged about 68, was instantly killed by a lightning strike in his son James Wood's barn near Farmersburg while returning from church with his wife. He was a longtime resident, active in public affairs and the Grange, and is survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter. Funeral held at Friendship Baptist Church with Masonic rites.

Yard Boles of the planing mill narrowly escaped death when his right pant leg was caught in shafting. The belt slipped from the shafting and stopped the machinery, saving him from severe injury.

A Young Forger Alva Lankford Charged
Alva Lankford a 19 year old Carlisle resident passed a 45 50 forged check bearing B R Davidson’s signature at Peoples Bank Carlisle. The check was cashed by Ed Akin and the forgery discovered days later. He was arrested and sent to jail after waiving preliminary hearing and failing to post 500 bond.

A. W. Springer’s Sons and partners shipped 193 head of export cattle weighing about 1220 pounds to Liverpool on a special train for Swift & Company. The shipment, the largest from Sullivan County, earned roughly $86 per animal and over $15,000 total. The sale reflects local cattle markets and encourages continued cattle raising.

Their Golden Wedding at Prairie Creek
Capt. and Mrs. James Rice marked their 50th anniversary in Prairie Creek Vigo county with a large family gathering. Married August 9 1852 in Pleasant Garden Ohio they received a rocking chair from children and many gifts as friends from Terre Haute Farmersburg Hemito and Sullivan joined in the celebration. Mr Rice now 85 is feeble while Mrs Rice age 69 remains active in memory of early days.

Escapee from Hopkinsville asylum captured in town
Osa Chastain, a 25 year old son of Samuel and Mrs Chastain now of Canton Mississippi, escaped from Hopkinsville asylum and was caught on a street by Deputy Robert Gambill. He was returned to custody with the hospital sending officials to verify and arrange disposition.

Self-inflicted death ends troubled Osborne life
Zibe Osborne aged 34 and son of William Osborne died Saturday by firing a 32 caliber revolver into his brain. He had suffered cancer on the face and stomach trouble and had shown severe despondency after returning from Hot Springs. A note to his Chicago sister warned of his plan, and after a family reunion he shot himself as relatives looked on. The body was found near a grape arbor, and Dr. Thompson said death was instantaneous from a skull wound. Funeral services were held Sunday at the M E church in Farmersburg with burial at Little Flock.
