Convention Notes Reflect Strong Republican Enthusiasm
The convention drew the county GOP’s largest turnout yet as supporters from former Democratic areas show growing Republican influence. Attendees included John H. Jackson a longtime party stalwart and William Pitser now in Vigo county en route to Turman township. Fremont voters from 1856 were present along with stage seats held by Nathan Weir Kenneth Self Nie Yeager and T K Cush.

Tragedy at Union Mine Pond Claims Raymond Simpkins
Raymond Simpkins twenty years old drowned Sunday morning at eleven o clock in the pond at the Union mine one mile north of Sullivan. He likely suffered a cramp and sank before rescue. Burke Eaton nearly reached him as he went under but could not save him. The body was recovered three hours later. Simpkins recently had fevers with leg cramps and had worked at F M Douthitt’s clothing store. Funeral held Monday in Paxton with burial at Snyder cemetery. Rev John M Nash officiated.

Former Sullivan Girl Elopes from Colorado Springs
Miss Lillie Parks daughter of M. O. Parks formerly of Sullivan now in Castle Rock Colorado eloped from Colorado Springs and married in Denver to Jack Wolford a dry goods clerk. Miss Parks and her sister Mona lived in Colorado Springs where they worked. Mona returned to their room to find a note announcing the marriage plans.

Pleasant Moore of Sullivan county died of paralysis Monday at the Soldiers Home in Lafayette Indiana where he had lived some time. He was a private in Company I 17th Indiana Infantry and took part in all duties of that company. Born on a farm now in Sullivan county he lived there all his life about 80 years. He leaves two sons near Shelburn and a brother Jordan Moore a respected citizen. The article notes many Civil War veterans passing away in recent years.

Harvey Brickey the one year eight months old son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Brickey died Wednesday morning July 20 at 8:30. Interment was held at Mt Tabor.

Fire destroys barns and damages nearby structures
A fire originating in a frame barn behind the county jail spread briefly in the business district yesterday afternoon. The jail barn and a rear Coffman house barn burned, roofs north of them ignited, several sheds burned, and nearby properties including the New Home hotel and Christian church parsonage caught fire but were saved. Poor water pressure hindered firefighting and several Sullivan Telephone Company wires were broken, crippling the exchange temporarily.
