Tramps Make a Demand. Woman Calls Brother for Help
In Fairbanks on August 1 two tramps visited Mrs. Kate DeBaun asking for food. She was frightened but used a telephone to call her brother. The intruders departed before assistance arrived. Telephones are noted as a farmer's necessity.

Question of Moving College Is Unsettled
At a Merom meeting of Union Christian College stockholders the move to Muncie was left to trustees with power to act. The trustees met next day and took no action due to no firm offer from Muncie. The college building will be repaired and readied for next year's work.

Carter Family Reunited After Separation in Carlisle
J W Carter, once reported missing, reappeared last Wednesday and traveled with his daughter Carrie who had eloped. They then returned to Carlisle Thursday afternoon from Terre Haute where she was staying with Mrs Dolph De Baun.

Thieves Operate Near Sullivan Area Farm
Thieves entered the home of Charles Thrasher, five miles east of Sullivan, and took 38 dollars hidden under a pillow. A horse and buggy were stolen from Ira Lewellyn’s barn the same night and found abandoned near Dugger the next day. No clues yet.

Miner suffers deep cut from broken beer bottle
Edgar Lyle of Gilmour Indiana was cut when he trod on a broken beer bottle. A piece of glass penetrated to the bone and a sliver remained in the wound, threatening blood poisoning.

In Gilmour Indiana yesterday during a ball game Fred Clark and Fred Jones fought. Jones drew a revolver but friends intervened and prevented a shooting.

Caledonia fatal shotgun shooting of Bert Willis
In Caledonia on Saturday night Ben Blue age 17 shot and killed Bert Willis a 25 year old coal miner after a dispute. Blue surrendered with his father in Sullivan. Willis funeral was Monday. coroner ruled Blue not to blame based on the evidence.

Top Pay for Old Rural Carriers
The postal service adjusts salaries for rural carriers. Carriers appointed before June 30, 1904, who earned the $600 maximum will now receive $720. The July 1, 1904 schedule remains in effect for carriers appointed after June 30.
Parker and His Party
The piece argues Alton B. Parker is as bad as the Democratic Party and would not veto a 45 cent dollar if elected. It notes Parker voted to cut the dollar to 50 cents in 1896 and 1900 and stresses his lifelong Democratic loyalty. The author predicts a strong national vote against the Democrats on November 8, 1904.

Another Big Coal Company Buys Land in Sullivan County
Robert H. Catlin of Terre Haute acting for Kettle Creek Mining Company bought 755 acres of coal land, bringing holdings to 800 acres at 55 dollars per acre totaling 41525 dollars. A coal shaft near completion struck coal at 165 feet. An April 15 1903 Sullivan Union note highlights the county wealth of coal under Sullivan.

U C College Trustee Robbed in Indianapolis Depot
Rev. M. Shinkle of Five Miles Ohio, trustee of Union Christian College, was robbed in the Indianapolis Union depot while en route to Sullivan. Thieves took 75 dollars cash a 16 dollar check and 1100 to 1200 dollars in notes. He notified State Bank officials.

Chicken Thieves Busted After Poultry Heist
Homer Morgan awakened by a poultry raid in Prairie Creek. He nabbed the thieves’ buggy as they fled. Terre Haute authorities were alerted and began a search. Officers Harkness and Welsh captured Thomas Holt in Merom and Palestine, Ill., who confessed to the gang.

Miner Injured in Fall at Cummings Mine Near Farmersburg
Ross Lawson, a miner at the Cummings mine near Farmersburg, sustained severe injuries from a state fall last Wednesday. Seven men had to lift the state off him. He was taken to St. Anthony's hospital in Terre Haute and is expected to recover.

New Church Organized at Hymera

Central Union Will Enter Sullivan Telephone Exchange
A Sullivan town board meeting last Monday approved reviving a 1896 franchise for Central Union Telephone Company. The franchise had been revoked in 1900 but was restored by a three to one vote. The company already secured an exchange site and will install a system at once.

Eclipse Band Reorganized in Sullivan After Donation
The Eclipse Band of Sullivan, once a premier state ensemble, was reorganized last Friday thanks to a $500 donation from local business and professional leaders. New officers include Director W. E. Burton Manager E. S. Crowder Secretary Carl Stratton Treasurer Burton. The band will hold its first concert on the public square next Friday and offers free summer concerts each week while purchasing new uniforms music and equipment.

Elmer Woodard, who became violently insane last week, was taken to Evansville to the Southern Hospital for the Insane Thursday by Sheriff Dudley. Woodard's father and brother, John L. Woodard and Hud Woodard, accompanied him.
