Large late Thursday storm floods city streets
A brief cloudburst and severe wind hit the city late Thursday afternoon, lasting about half an hour. Torrential rain flooded streets and lawns, damaging trees and small vegetation, and killing hundreds of sparrows roosting near the courthouse. Many birds were found drowned on the courthouse lawn.

The W A White homestead petition for Brightlight concluded at six o'clock Friday evening. Depositions will be typed and sent to the U S Land Commission in Washington for final action. Judge George W Buff presided as the United States Land Commission heard the case. John Kimberlain rebutted with an abstract from Al Shipman, who White said invited him to file the claim. Shipman and White testified they were not business partners. White acknowledged Shipman advised him not to homestead, but asked White to proceed.

Wake Giles, a noted Sullivan resident, suffered a compound fracture of the left ankle after stepping onto a wagon hub at Merom Station. The team started suddenly, throwing him to the ground. Dr Garland Scott treated him and he was brought home by automobile. He will be laid up for some time.
