Exemption Draft Begins Monday for Sullivan County
The Sullivan County exemption board will mail notices to the first 448 men drawn in the recent military draft. The board meets at the courthouse Monday through Wednesday to examine 150 Monday 149 Tuesday and 149 Wednesday. The list of 448 is printed in this issue. Herbert S. Leach of this city, who has just returned from Calcutta, is among the first 448.

Haddon Township Twins Enter U S Army Aviation Service
Twin brothers John R. and Thomas W. Howard of Haddon Township enlisted in the U S Army aviation branch at Terre Haute on Saturday. They weighed 147 and 148 pounds and stood 5 feet 9 inches and slightly shorter. A facial scratch helped officers tell them apart. Clyde Burroughs of Carlisle also enlisted and went to Jefferson Barracks at St Louis. Hal White of Merom enlisted as a second class musician in the Navy and Jesse Pinkston of Merom joined as a cook in the fourth class.

Permelia Hines, 68, wife of Henry Hines, died Saturday at her daughter Mrs Walter Becks home in Terre Haute. The couple formerly lived in Carlisle before moving here. Government Takes Over Sullivan Ditch Machines
Government agents seized the only two ditching machines in the county owned by William H. Jones Jr. and James R. Riggs for use in cantonnement work. The Jones machine shipped from Merom Station, the Riggs machine ready for shipment to Grassland Illinois. Uncle Sam pays for use or compensation if lost or damaged. Augustus Riggs, a Shelburn native and noted Terre Haute figure, has been appointed inspector at the Curtiss flying machine factory in Buffalo New York. Terre Haute July 27 Donn M. Roberts long linked to the Terre Haute and Merom traction line case is back in court records as the 1908 receiver is renamed and bonds reset. Marshall Bailey aged 82 a well known farmer six miles northeast of the city died suddenly Monday afternoon while seated at his home after a period of ill health from arterial hardening. Funeral today at Palmer's Prairie Christian church with burial in Palmer's Prairie cemetery. He came from Lawrence County to this county during the Civil War and lived on the same farm over fifty years.
