Sullivan Guard Company L 1st Regiment Muster Roll History
The Sullivan company of the National Guard known as Co. L 1st Regiment served about three years after being mustered in around 1890 and then mustered out. It numbered about one hundred men with George T. Briggs as captain W. Lucas first lieutenant A B Thurber second lieutenant E P Lacey first orderly sergeant. After Lucas resigned Hin kle became 1st lieutenant and Carl W Kelly took over as ord. sergeant with Wm Pyles succeeding Thurber as second lieutenant.

Veteran Forty Niner Jonathan Knotts Dies at 85
Jonathan Knotts, a Sullivan county resident and Civil War veteran born in 1828 near New Lebanon, died Monday at his niece’s home after years with yellow jaundice. A forty-niner who traveled to California in 1849, he lived much of his last 25 years in Palestine Illinois and left four or five children including Mrs Andy Sinclair, John Knotts, Ed Knotts, and Mrs Douglas Sinclair. Burial is in Palestine Illinois.

Dr Byers Death Recalls Kidnapping
Broken in spirit by nearly a decade of fruitless searching for two missing persons the Byers family pressed on with help from Terre Haute and other cities. They pursued a supposed gypsy kidnap gang across the United States but found no trace of the boy. Some Seeleyville residents think he died in an abandoned mine shaft near home, yet the shaft’s flooding and gases kept proof from surfacing.

Lewis Henry longtime Hymera resident and former partner of O M Patton in a local grocery died Saturday night in McAlister Oklahoma from appendicitis. He worked for a coal company in McAlister and was brother of Judge D W Henry of Terre Haute. His wife, Marie Asbury of Farmersburg, was his spouse. The couple moved from Hymera to Oklahoma about two years ago.

Auto Crash Near Carlisle Injures Two Men
An automobile skidded on a sharp curve three miles south of Carlisle on Saturday night, plunging over an embankment. Injured are John T. Boyd, president of the Second National Bank of Vincennes, who suffered a deep forehead gash and a sprained ankle, and John T. Oliphant of the Vincennes Bridge Company, who had three ribs torn loose and extensive bruising.

Miner dies after lift accident in Shelburn

Mrs. Wildon Undergoes Appendectomy at Union Hospital
Shelburn April 26 Mrs Harry Wildon of this place underwent an appendectomy at Union Hospital in Terre Haute after weeks of illness. She rallied nicely from the operation and is reported improving.

First Flood Victim Passes in Merom
Mrs. B M Doan, 47, wife of Buel Doan, died of pneumonia contracted during the Merom flood. She had been ill three weeks. The Doans were driven from their home by the flood and stayed with friends. They returned home before the house was dry. Mrs. Doan had been quite ill for days. Mr Doan sold his farm due to heavy losses from the floodwaters.
