Two separate organizations are formed in Curry Township as Sunday schools plan conventions this Sunday. Local church leaders expect involvement from residents, with meetings set to discuss programs, funding, and community outreach initiatives.
Jefferson and Jeffersonville region Sunday school conventions report large attendances and rising enrollment. Two Curry associations form North and South groups with officers named for each. Upcoming meetings planned for Haddon Carlisle Turman and Hamilton townships with programs, addresses, and music.
Pleasant dreams of Thomas MacNichols of Dugger were interrupted by a head ache in Indianapolis. He woke in a Capital hotel room with his money and watch missing from a salt sack. He says two men paid for the room and he cannot remember details after drinking with a friend.
County commissioners in special session fixed Tuesday May 9 as the date for Sullivan local option election after a petition with 222 names was filed April 3. W P Straiton and W M Draper named election commissioners. auditor authorized to issue notices. Sullivan has been dry for eight years since 1912. previous local option vote occurred then.
The will of Emery Forst, a prominent local businessman, filed for probate after his sudden death last week. Dated April 25 1914 in Fulton County Indiana, it provides debts and funeral expenses first, $100 to son Earl within a year, $100 to daughter Dessie Wiltse with the same provision, and the residue of real and personal estate to widow Flora Forst as executrix.
Miss Jennette McMahon 27 known as Jennie Jones shot Lawrence DeCarlos in Terre Haute last week injuring him seriously. DeCarlos is at St Anthony's hospital with non fatal injuries. McMahon says she shot to defend her two young stepsisters aged 10 and 15. She was released on bond.
Ea Joyce of Princeton visited the city on Monday for business, staying for meetings and discussions with local officials and merchants.
Seven Shelburn men convicted on liquor law violations pled guilty in circuit court before Judge Bridwell. Each man received fines and sentences to the state penal farm ranging from 60 to 90 days, with several also hit for operating a blind tiger and related offenses. The men may serve the maximum sentence unless fines are paid, with $1 per day credited for time served.
Rev. R. H. Toole conducts ongoing revival at the MM. E. Church drawing large crowds. Sunday services featured a men's chorus led by R. W. Akin with Ruth Reid solo, Toole preaching on The Valley of Decision from Joel, and Sunday evening a solo by Reid Ross while the chorus sang Standing on the Promises.
Roy Cunningham, 19, son of William Cunningham, was struck by a Ford driven by Dr. W Ford as his bicycle wheel got caught in a street car track. He was thrown to the pavement and run over but suffered only minor scratches and bruises. Dr. W N Thompson attended him.
Emery R. Forst, 56, proprietor of the Forst 5 and 10 cent store on the south side of Sullivan's public square, died suddenly Wednesday morning at 8:30 in the store apartments after a brief illness with heart trouble. He moved to Sullivan in 1914 to start the business. He is survived by his wife and two children Earl Forst of Bluffton and Mrs. Wiltse. The remains were taken to Bluffton for funeral services at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. Simons.
The county held an eighth grade written examination on Saturday with 125 pupils participating. This is about 75 fewer than last month’s turnout. At the first test 225 students took the exam and 72 passed. State submitted questions require a passing grade for high school entry, though Sullivan and several other schools exempt certain students.
Farmersburg April 18 Walker V. Jennings president of the Indiana Retail Lumber Dealers Association will join northern states retail inspection committees in a trip of investigation to New Orleans. The Southern Pine Association will cover all incurred expenses. Indiana committee members are C. D. Root Crown Point Jennings and H. C. Rechtin Evansville.
George E. Finney aged 83, editor and owner of the Martinsville Democrat, died at his Martinsville home. He spent sixty seven years in newspapers and published the Democrat for twenty one years. His son Fred Finney, now with the Democrat, previously edited the Herald at Hymera.
The Rev U M McGuire of the First Baptist church in Bicknell preached on The Battle Cry of Peace. He said the photo drama is didactic and argues for armament and wealth interest, condemning war as driven by commercial competition. He urged an international government to outlaw predatory trade and secure peace.
Sullivan Commandery No. 54 Knights Templar will confer the Order of the Temple on three candidates and the Malta degree on four tomorrow night. The meeting starts at seven o clock at the Masonic hall. Easter observance is set for next Sunday with a 2:30 service at the Baptist church led by Rev. Stewart I Long. The public is invited. Plans call for attendance at the Grand Commandery meeting in Indianapolis on May 10 and participation in the parade.
R. T. Boston of the Boston Coat and Suit Store announced that the Boston store will relocate around July 1 to the west side public square space once used by Scott Hardware. Remodeling is underway with a large front and plate glass display, and the store will occupy two floors and the basement with several departments. The shop has traded from the southwest corner of the public square for years.
Frank Rosebolt a 20 year old son of John Rosebolt of Riverton drowned when his motor boat capsized near the Plow riffle north of Riverton. Coroner J H Neff attributed the death to drowning and the body was recovered about three hours later sixty rods south of the riffle. The funeral will be held at the Christian church in Riverton with interment at Palestine. This is the second Rosebolt drowning in the family, a two year old brother having died about eight years ago.
Over six days ending Monday evening the U S treasury deficit rose to $5,772,405 as receipts totaled $11,607,785 against disbursements of $17,380,190. Daily figures show varying receipts and larger disbursements, with a sharp gap widening the shortfall.
William P. Lisman of Carlisle area dies at 66 after extended pneumonia. Funeral at Bethlehem church. survived by two sisters and several brothers. Lisman affiliated with Carlisle Presbyterian Church. Boncie Gummere sues William J. Jackson for 10000 damages over her husband Howard Gummere’s death in a C E I derailment near Shelburn to Worthington last December.
The preliminary reading and oratorical contest to pick city high school representatives for the Southern Indiana contest at Bedford on May 18 was held Friday evening in the assembly room. Roland Campbell named as orator and Josephine Beasley as reader among seven readers and four orators.
Attorney James R. Cauble of Indianapolis, formerly of Carlisle, was in the city on legal business Monday.
Five Merom men rode to Terre Haute when the Ford overturned after a tire blew out near Seventh street and Margaret avenue. Medford Bates and Gregg Page survived with minor injuries, while Clarence Beever Hubble Henry Burton were badly hurt and taken to St Anthony's hospital in critical or serious condition.
