Higher Court Affirms Beard Lease Case in Knox County
The Knox appellate court upholds the lower court ruling in Harris et al vs Lee and Fred Bays, affirming rights under a gas and oil lease on the Beard oil lease. Sullivan Man Present at Lee Surrender Fifty One Years Ago
Edward Taylor of Sullivan recalled on Monday that fifty one years prior he witnessed General Lee surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Court House. Born in Lynchburg Virginia, he joined the Confederate Army and served over three years in the First Virginia Battalion of Artillery before moving to Crawfordsville and then Sullivan in 1880.

Herman R. Taylor, who bought the John H. Allen undertaking business, opens new rooms on West Washington. He and his wife are licensed embalmers and will use T. P. McBride of Sullivan. Mrs Thomas Bland a native of the county and widow of Civil War veteran Thomas Bland died after a long illness at her daughter Mrs James F Springer’s home. Born August 6 1846 near New Lebanon she lived on farms near New Lebanon Sullivan and Mt Carmel Ill before moving to Mt Carmel 19 years ago. Survived by children Kittie Springer Charlotte Abbie Ray Richard A. Bland. Funeral held at New Lebanon M E church with Rev Tucker and burial at Camp Ground Cemetery.

School enumerators started Monday in Sullivan city and county towns to list school children ages six to twenty one. Ed P Lacey handles Sullivan city, with completion required by April 30. Parents must cooperate and report all eligible children, including mental defectives, to determine per capita state funds.
Dome Gas Company Plans Citywide Main Extensions
The newly organized Dome Gas Company announces a major extension of gas mains in the city. Mains will be laid on East Washington and East Jackson streets and on principal streets west of State street. A salesroom and office open on West Washington street will offer lighting and cooking equipment.
