Friday March 29th marked the closing of a small Fairbanks township school taught by J. Lana Jonson. Due to a smallpox scare the program was swapped for an egg roast and taffy pull. Mrs Mary Jane Dudley nee Benefield aged 83 died Saturday at the home of her niece Mrs Willis Liston in Terre Haute. Rabbits Take Boat Ride in Floodwaters
The Wabash rose to within three feet of the high water mark Monday night causing unease for levees at Merom and Turman townships. Watchmen guarded the levee while water four to five feet deep covered Riverton road. Thousands of rabbits drowned as hunters found many perched on logs and vines. Captain Reid ferried a boatload home and released them.

Jackson Township Men Sell Sassafras for 1600 Dollars
Two Jackson township men earned 1800 dollars from a sassafras removal deal on forty acres. They contracted to clear seven dollars per acre, used dynamite to remove roots, and sent the prep sassafras to Indianapolis. The total received was 1880 dollars including the contract price.

John Ezra, serving a life sentence for the February 1895 murder of Solomon Finklestein, a Jewish peddler, at Jackson Hill, was pardoned by Governor Marshall on recommendation of the State Board of Pardons. He struck Finklestein with a poker at a saloon, died shortly after. Ezra resided in Terre Haute and had been paroled two years earlier after working in a Jasonville mine.
